Crash To Desktop Problem

I'm pretty sure I have all the necessary hardware to run this game but whenever the game lasts a few hundred years it will crash on me.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

I was playing an immortal character for the first time and was having a lot of fun.

Please register your game first, then you have access to the tech support subforum and you can ask there for a solution with you giving detailed specifications,like
which version of CK2 you're running at (top-right corner of CK2 launcher and ingame bottom-left corner the checksum,e.g. 2.7.1 BPAH ) , which DLCs and Mods you're using etc.

Do I do that through Steam?

I tried right clicking on the game and brought up the CD key but it doesn't have the code for CK2, I have the codes for all of my DLC however.

I purchased the game in a pack of 4 (CK2, HOI3, EU4, Vic 2), does that have something to do with it?


I know it's been a little while since I checked this, the Summer Sale had me distracted

Are these crashes triggered by any particular action or event? Or apparently random?

Is this just in the one particular save, or any new game you start too?

They don't appear to be triggered by any particular event or action and it's happened with a few of my previous save games. I just assumed they had been corrupted or something - but like my original post says I finally managed to get an immortal character and wanted to live out his life at the very least so I'm a little more invested in this game than the others.

My usual start date is 769 (I don't play the other dates often enough to tell you if there's an issue with later bookmarks) and it plays fine for the first couple centuries then I can't seem to play any further (between 900 and 1000 CE), it just sends me to the desktop.

I've tried reloading the games, backing up files through Steam, nothing seems to remedy the situation.

Please do a full **clean** re-install:

- move any valued save games elsewhere
- "uninstall" in Steam-CK2
- manually delete both the Steam/SteamApps/common/CK2 AND Documents/Paradox/CK2 folders
- re-install game in Steam, run a Steam Verify when done.
- start the game with no mods active and test

In particular you need to make sure there are no files or folders left under either the Steam CK2 or Documents CK2 locations, before installing again.


IF that doesn't help, DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/CK2/settings.txt.
From your Documents/Paradox/CK2/logs/ folder, attach system.log .

Edit that settings.txt as follows:

refreshRate=60
fullScreen=yes
borderless=no

No other obvious problems in those files. Do these crashes create a dump file in Documents/paradox/ck2/dumps/ ?

With this save you mention, is the crash repeatable in it? That is could I load it and expect to see the crash?

Does it still happen in 2.7.2 ?

Altered settings.txt as per your instruction.

It does appear to be making dump files and yes, the crash is quite predictable.

2.7.2 is the update that came yesterday right? I haven't loaded the game yet, I'll do that now and give it a try.

The good news is I was able to run that save for over a year under the internal beta of 2.8 with no crash. So it seems the bug is already fixed!

The bad news is I cannot guarantee save game compatibility with 2.8 once it comes out. It ran fine for me, but the devs won't make a statement until patch release day.

I do not, I'm sorry. There were a number of events that occurred just after the time when it crashed for me under 2.7.2 (pregnancy, a siege success, etc) any one of which may have been the trigger.
