So, per the suggestions in a previous thread, I've been backing up every modification I've made every step of the way.

Unfortunately, I have uncovered a new problem. Somehow, for some reason, after a period of one game day from starting the scenario in 1936 (where all of my modding has been done) it crashes to the desktop.

So the first thing I did was retrace my steps back to the last point where I knew when the game wouldn't crash, which luckily wasn't too far behind.

Unfortunately, even going back to that very point, it STILL crashed, which means something else is wrong somewhere.

Other than the INC files, a few graphics(all modded before this point) and some bits in the country.csv and the worldnames.csv, I haven't really modified anything, except for messing with the provincenames file to change Leningrad to St. Petersburg(but I did that awhile ago and everything worked fine.)

I did poke around in the scenario/other text files for a bit looking for the 1936 country descriptisions. I thought I hadn't saved those files when I exited, but I might've made a mistake. Could doing something there have accidentally caused the crash?

Or could something else be wrong? I'm getting absolutely no warnings of any errors when loading the game and the scenario. It just...crashes.

I tested a few other scenarios just to see if they would crash as well, and while they didn't, they did proceed much more slowly than they used to.

There is one more possibility...I used the editor to alter the ministers of a new nation I plan on making(tag of u01), since I've done editing of ministers, leaders, and tech teams with the editor all without corruption before. Is it possible that somehow THIS could be doing it? That is, the existence of the ministers, not the fact that I used the editor, since if it corrupted the game I'd get an error upon loading the game, and I don't. (Version Armageddon 1.1, by the way.)

Well until I got to the above, I was going to speculate that maybe the csv. file for world names is saved in an wrongful format, which can happen IF you do not use an reliable editor.

However, then I read above...

Here is the problem with the editor IF it is used to save ANY file whatsoever. It can 'insert' changes where you have not modded, so you are not looking for errors in those places.

Say no more--you have the guilty party.

That takes a reinstall to fix, sorry to say, but that *does* give you the chance to delete the !@#$%ing editor.

But everytime I've used the editor and it corrupted something, it gave me an error box upon starting up the game which prevents the game from working. Even if that doesn't happen, there's usually UNKNOWN STRING WANTED all over the place in various tech files or what have you.

And the biggest part: I have used it without error to modify ministers, leaders, and tech teams before. I used it for the ministers of a large number of nations, in fact, and everything worked splendidly.

So I don't think it's the editor. Not this time.

Well, I now know it wasn't the editor. A fresh reinstall played fine, but replacing all of the original INC files with my modified ones(and the scenario file) caused a crash again.

Which means I missed something when checking the backups for problems. I need to go over all of them again, it seems.

You know, instead of altering the actual files, you could use the JSGME mod enabler (buddled with my mods and others). It leaves your vanilla files intact, and allows you to go from modded to unmodded at the touch of a button.

Well you gave us a lot of ideas in your post, only you can narrow it down.

Sometimes it is in times like these at least 'two' things wrong somewhere that together keep it crashing and you looking for straws.

Hmmmm, try this:

Just overwrite the "doomsdaytext.csv"

After using the editor, this is the corrupt file.
Everytime i use the editor, I overwrite this file with the old one, then it works fine.

Confessions of a HOI II Editor user.

I too use the editor for alot of things and i too have been spanked for using it.

Yes it tampers with files that aren't even being utilised during the mod process.

Yes it spams certain files with error causing redundant clauses (Glasgow in Uk inc anyone?!)

Yes it sometimes lets you do this and sometimes won't let you do that (OOB's ffs!)

But, like yourself, learning the ropes as it were with paradox titles, i find it indispensable.

Besides, i'm getting the impression that you, like me, upon error messages, actually track down and fix the corruptions and thus learn even more in the process.

I find that a combination of editor and manual editing is necessary for myself with my limited understanding of the command and file system.

One day i will know enough to do most modding manually, until then however (or until some noble soul releases a comprehensive bug free editor) i'll continue to use it, tho understanding its myriad problems and consciously weening myself from its dependency in the process.

Toward an encyclopedic understanding of the HOI II code.

Soldier on.

PS: Good Tip Cpack ;)
