Surprise!

Some traits stacked:
cswEiq6.jpg
I'd be interested how you've done that on the technical side, since the features obviuosely stack. Did you make individual versions of every combination? That would seem like so much work I can't imagine that is true. Anyway, I'm really fascinated :)

Now to some feedback on the individual items:

UGLY: Like it. Well I guess there are people who look more ugly (maybe Tyrion Lannister, but that could be shown by stacked with "maimed" I guess), but it is a good representation.

FAIR: Like it. Though I'm not sure what you have done excactly. Block some features that would previousely be applied? Or smoothed the skin?

DRUNKARD: Like it. The red cheeks are noticable, but not intrusive.

STRESSED: Like it. Dark circles around the eyes? Perfect :D

MAIMED: Not sure. Potentially a little bit repetitive, but assuming that is the only frame available. It would be strange if everyone got maimed at the exact same spot. Visually good, though.

POSSESSED: Dislike it. It has been said by others already, but that just looks like the person actually IS a demon, not possessed by one. We should remember a lot of the "possessed" cases actually represent mental illnesses unknown in the middle ages. So Maybe keep the idea of enlarged, whitened eyes, but toned down a whole lot.

DEPRESSED: Like it. Crying that can't be hidden anymore, seems plausible. Also visually well executed.

PLAGUE: Like it. Not much else to say.

INFIRM: Like it. Drooling, if I see correctly? Good idea.

INCAPABLE: Dislike it. I really can't spot a distinctive feature here, especially since that one should be more severe than "infirm". Is it the red things under the eyes? Because - maybe especially on this skin tone - it could also be some sort of makeup or war paint imo. Maybe combine it with the features from infrim, since the two can't stack anyway?

MEASLES: Like it.

ILL: Like it. But just to be sure, it's the white space around the eyes? Because if that's it, you will definitely have to rework slavic women first, or else they will look like normal humans when ill :p

LUNATIC: Like it. Arguably it does not fulfill all stereotypes of lunatics, but it's distinctive and well exectued, so I think that's enough for a game. But does it work properly with beards?

LEPER: Like it.

Ok... Can we make this a standard for all future forum critics?? thanks for the breakdown :D

Not all features stack. The traits are divided into 3-4 layers. So you can stack those together. For example, fair and ugly are not possible to have together, so they are on the same layer, meaning you cant use them on the same portrait.

Incapable is more noticeable in lighter characters and usually male. They have bruised heads to simulate getting knocked in the head a few times too much.

Possessed is something i have already revisited, but it seems i will need to completely rethink it to match the "epileptic" description rather than a demonic one. Since i am away from my computer, ese, can you post a pic of the current possessed trait? Id like some community feedback.

Edit: found a pic from a fellow HIP hopper.

Ok, well that seems logical.

Ah, ok. Guess it just isn't that noticable in the picture then, and I can only give proper feedback once I have seen it in-game.
The description sounds reasonable, though.

Hmm...
okay, well I think I would say that this is still too much demon.

I mean, there is a strong difference between "suspected demon possessed" and "actually demon possesed". Like you said, gameplay-wise also "epileptic" or other illnesses misinterpreted by medieval people as bad spirits count towards the trait.
The current layer would, however, fit perfectly on a "demon spawn" character! These are the characters we get in-game who actually are possessed by a demon. Maybe this would make for a nice easter-egg, though I don't know if it is possible, since "demon spawn" is just a character flag iirc.

In general, I would prefere more the design direction of something like these:
crazy-eyes.jpg

poss.jpg

Though arguably, even the "white eyes" could be humanely possible:
image_0878c3762b.jpg

exorcist-studies-regan-title.jpg

What I would not find fitting for the general trait are things like these:
possessed_glossy_eyes___photoshop_video_tutorial_by_conzpiracy-d72e97z.jpg

torchwood-season-2-9-something-borrowed-captain-jack-harkness-nostrovite-alien-teeth-eyes-claws-john-barrowman-monster-review-episode-guide-list.jpg

torchwood-season-2-7-dead-man-walking-owen-possessed-black-eyes-burn-gorman-review-episode-guide-list.jpg

Those are the ones that fit the "demon spawn" only.
The difference obviousely is that the first photos show just ordinary human eyes in strange and difficult positions, while the latter ones can only be achieved by editing/visual effects and contact lenses etc.

But yeah, overall I think you should consider redoing that one thing.

Anyway, looking forward to the next iteration :)

Maybe you can put the lunatic face for the possessed + homosexual trait?
I don't think portraying homosexuals as lunatics is morally or socially acceptable. ;)
Indeed.
That would be the mistake again of mixing up the "perception by society" with the actual physical appearance.
While the medieval society might very well have thought gay people to be possessed by demons, they clearly weren't/aren't. And also I am pretty sure the gay people I know don't look that way. ;)
Anyway, imo that picture just looks like the guy is angry, not possessed.

I agree with the previous posters as to the possessed effect, though you certainly did convey the attraction penalty of possession well, I suppose...

I'm not really certain that the possessed trait necessarily needs a visual indicator on its own, as the flavour of possession is defined by event rather than trait. Is it possible to make portrait modifiers based on the later events? At least with that you could keep the horror design for the specifically demonic flavoured ones.

Other suggestion: is it possible to disable certain portrait effects if the character is dead? Many distant relative now having the disease features postmortem makes for a very poxy ancestry. Obviously not for permanent traits, but the dynasty might prefer to remember their ancestors minus the buboes.

Yes, and it should be as simple as setting up a character flag. That means adding modified event file(s), though, and for compatibility reasons I don't want to go down that road.

Possible and easy. All of the traits that add graphics in CPRplus are not congenital, so chances are diseases don't and shouldn't define someone's life - so I wholly agree with your suggestion. Would you still like to see graphics for diseases that are seriously life-threatening, as you seem to prefer?

And now, for my review.

Western Faces: I think you've successfully fixed the western female faces, actually. Just checked both varieties and the modded portrait sets actually look really good now. A couple tweaks could probably be done (lips, I think someone mentioned noses) but overall I think they look really fantastic. A definite improvement on the vanilla western face now, and I never thought I'd say that.

Slavic Faces: These look absolutely fantastic. You worked magic on these.

Norse Faces: I've never been a huge fan of the Norse portraits in general. If there was an option to make them use the modified western faces, I'd probably take that. That being said, what they are now is a colossal improvement over the default Norse portrait set. That set honestly made me wince. This...actually fits thematically with the rest, and it looks pretty good. Considering what you had to work with, the state they're in now is an incredible accomplishment.

Arabic Faces:
I tend to think some of these are a bit too dark in complexion. This fits for some of the cultures that use them, but not all. Could potentially do with more variation? Aside from this, they look good!

Celtic Faces:
Again, this is a portrait pack I never much cared for to begin with and I would use the modified western faces for these if I could. If you want to tell me how I could edit the files for this to be possible, that would be fantastic. That being said, they actually don't look bad. My main issue with them is the lips. They look...jarring, somehow. Too big, too bright, something to that effect?

I'll leave it at that for now. Honestly, you've done some fabulous work on creating a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing look throughout the world of CK2. Please don't let my small criticisms make you think that I in any way don't appreciate the work done, or think that it's somehow not good. On that note, I'll end with some of my absolute favorite portraits.

Visigothic. Southern Slavic (Ruman in particular). Ugric (Possibly my absolute favorite). Alan (So...fluffy). Uyghur (A nice mix of far east and steppe look). Khitan. And lastly, Saxon (Because I've always like Saxons). I look forward to future changes and portraits!

I certainly think adding visual indicators for diseases are an improvement as they give a nice sense of the fear of catching a disease. My issue was more that, as you say, the cause of death need not define the last image that exists for a character. Obviously a character that died while blind should remain blind, but the dead need not also look ill.

Addendum: I did also have an issue with the effect that was used for gonorrhea, as that disease is not nearly so obviously visible and is more appropriate for syphilis. The confusing part here is that Paradox renamed the diseases with Sunset Invasion and so the gonorrhea trait's id is "syphilis" and syphilis's trait id is "has_aztec_disease".

. . . My issue was more that, as you say, the cause of death need not define the last image that exists for a character. Obviously a character that died while blind should remain blind, but the dead need not also look ill.
I will make some adjustments along those lines. Another thing I just thought of is keeping the Maimed or Wounded graphics visible if the cause of death is an accident.

Yes, that is actually an oversight. That graphic is for syphilis, not gonorrhea. Thanks for pointing it out! :)

Thank you so much for your detailed review! A post like this is more than I could ask for. :)

For the HIP release yesterday, I made tone adjustment to Norman female eyes and included them with sifsilver's approval. I'm a lot of more a novice when it comes to graphical editing skills; how do the eyes look? Do they fit in nicely with the rest of the facial elements?

Celtic Faces: . . . That being said, they actually don't look bad. My main issue with them is the lips. They look...jarring, somehow. Too big, too bright, something to that effect?
I take it that you are referring to the female lips? I absolutely share the same opinion, and I told sifsilver as much. :D I'm making tone and size adjustments at the moment, I'll talk sifsilver about it if anything good comes out of it.

As for modifying faces, just open the appropriate .gfx file for the portrait set you would like to modify (in this case interface/portraits/portraits_celtic.gfx) with a text-editing program. Then replace everything that starts with "GFX_celtic" besides sprite definitions (all those successive entries that start with "spriteType" and have "texturefile" in them) and headgear- and cloth-related entries. So you should modify six entries in total, and you should replace face-related entries like this:

Code:
portraitType = {
        name = "PORTRAIT_celticgfx_male"
        effectFile = "gfx/FX/portrait.lua"
        layer = { # GFX_TYPE:[d|p]INDEX:COLOR_LINK
            "GFX_character_background:p0"
            "GFX_celtic_male_clothes_behind:p3:c0"
            "GFX_celtic_male_headgear_behind:p5:c1"
            "GFX_celtic_male_hair_behind:p1:h:y"
            "GFX_celtic_male_beard_behind:p4:h:y"
            "GFX_german_male_base:p2"
            "GFX_german_male_neck:d0"
            "GFX_german_male_chin:d1"
            "GFX_german_male_cheeks:d4"
            "GFX_german_male_mouth:d2"
            "GFX_german_male_nose:d3"
            "GFX_german_male_eyes:d6"
            "GFX_german_male_eyes2:d6:e"
            "GFX_character_scars:p7:y"
            "GFX_character_reddots:p8"

            "GFX_character_blinded_eyes:p10"
            "GFX_celtic_male_clothes:p3:c2"
            "GFX_celtic_male_headgear_mid:p5:c3"
            "GFX_german_male_ear:d7"
            "GFX_celtic_male_beard:p4:h:y"

            { 10 10 10 } { 187 100 40 } { 255 255 255 }
        }

        eye_color_index = 9
        eye_color = {
            { 58 109 193}
            { 120 74 46 }
            { 34 103 36 }
        }

        headgear_that_hides_hair = { 10 }
    }

Note that "german" is the code for CPRplus's new Western face; "western" gives you the vanilla Western face.

Awesome post! Will get back to you on the eyes once I have a chance to study them. A question concerning the code: Does that modify the faces only or also set the hair to the default 'german' hair? By the looks of the code it keeps the Celtic style hair, but just figured I'd ask before I went in and started rewriting it.

CPRplus doesn't add new hair for Western males, so you can only switch GFX_celtic_male_hair. . . to GFX_western_male_hair. The mod DOES add new Western beards, though, so you may choose between german and western for beards.

Similarly, I don't think portraying schizophrenics or those with other mental illnesses that might've been interpreted as "possessed" as having bleeding demon eyes without retinas is particularly representative. :p

Honestly, though, the demon eyes on most revolt leaders and such is sort of an immersion-killer for me, even though they're neat and all (I like that there is _some_ kind of visual cue at least).

@Ese Khan I would happily help you with the event support for only showing such an extreme representation for the actual extreme cases that happen in-game as another person suggested. No, CPRplus shouldn't be a mod with event overrides, but EMF's just fine with it. Also, I seriously doubt that those events would actually require any kind of override (the characters are already internally flagged as demon spawn and such by the events that trigger off them). The only part that would take a little work is simply auditing all the possessed event chains / arcs to find out which ones are worthy of such extreme representation and what triggers to use in portrait_properties.txt to cover them all.
