I played CK when it was released, yet I must say one thing I found quite offputting. Having to micromanage even the most inconsequential hanger-on at court. Offspring of little relevance to me had to be micromanaged and all. That really taxed my patience.

Since I'd basically give the game another go, let me ask: Does the expansion or any mod help sort out such decisions rather than imposing them on the player?

I just pick an option that I always do if its a character that I don't care about. For example, if I get the "Someone is competing against you in class" event, I just always take the "I'll just have to work harder" option if its someone I don't care about. If they get the "stressed" trait, who cares, it'll probably have cleared up by the time they're useful.

jordarkelf, do you happen to have anything in your 'Bag Of Tricks' to help deal with those 'perpetual' students? What with the MTTH to get their main trait once they hit 16, I've had it take up into their early 20's before they finally lose the Education trait and get their main trait. It's irritating when it's your own kids and they start pestering you at age 16 for their own Court Position or their own Title and they are still technically still 'In School'. I prefer waiting until they get their main trait before I farm them out to their own Courts, but when I get those long delays - it's frustrating my plans.

What mods are you using? In vanilla education should almost always end at 16, the MTTH is low enough it seldom takes longer. Highest I'm seeing are some 17 year olds.
In my own game I have lowered it to 15 for a few reasons.

If you're using Jinnai's events I linked here, it's possible the version up for download is still bugged. Neverending educations was an issue with them (I just remembered).
If I have the time I'll check (much) later today. I know the copies I have work as intended, but that might be because I fixed them myself back then.

I consider Jinnai's mod excellent work, but when it stopped it still had its issues. Originally I had planned to have it in DVIP, but there was too much opposition to it, and there was too much I needed to edit to keep it all working fine. I mostly forgot about it until I saw this thread...

I downloaded Jinnai's mods at the same time I got the DVIP a few months back, tho I never installed them. It has happened even in a Vanilla DV game tho. Been playing the DVIP for a month or so now.
It's not like it's happening to every child, but I can pretty well depend on 1 or 2 kids in my Court holding off until they are 18 or 19 every generation (once in a great while, early 20's). I will double-check to make sure I didn't install his mods (I just thought they were interesting at the time, but I don't think I installed one).

EDIT: Now I'm not so sure I didn't install his. Who's is "the education switching event". I get that a lot and the popup says a promising young student is no longer, yadda yadda yadda... ?

Thanks for the quick reply. I went through and I don't see anything in the event files that pertain to Jinnai, so I didn't install it (downloaded several mods just to have them in case a back-up was needed for someone - just remembered why I have a whole slew of possible mods in a folder).

EDIT: Switching over to Pvt Messages since we're getting away from the original topic. My apologies to everyone.

The ability to micromanage the court is one of the best things about Crusader Kings. You don't hear people complaining about micromanaging the economy in Victoria.

I too when I started had difficulty with being asked about every single child and every little thing going on. But now I've had a number of games where you don't have many kids in your court and you actually miss that.

It's things like this that makes CK unique and different.

I mean if you don't have control or influence in this, the child growing up is just another child that could've popped out of nowhere.

Eh? For many, Victory was too much of a micromanagement hell. That's why it did so poorly. Just too much micromanagement for the bulk of players.

I myself don't want to make pretty inconsequential decisions in games. That's boring fiddling. I want to make critical decisions and focus on that rather than busying myself with stuff any real ruler would not preoccupy himself with. That applies to managing nobodies in CK and pops in Victoria. That's just not what historical rulers wasted their time on.

In CK, managing your own children should be quite enough.

If you a want a "broad stroke" management as a historical ruler, I suggest Europa Universalis. There you don't manage details, you make big decisions and go to war. For me, that style is boring.

The appeal in games like CK and Rome is about (micro)managing people. You groom courtiers so they become a great ruler/steward/spymaster/bishop etc... or you groom people in Rome so that they become great generals and their career paths are chosen by you.

There are plenty of games where you don't do that where you take big picture ruler decisions like Europa Universalis, Civilization etc... Frankly, if you don't like it you should play those instead of changing games that that a unique personality.

Gee, you don't seem to be in a charitable or helpful mood...

Paradox's games are designed to be moddable. And fans love that flexibility. It allows the game to be customised to different tastes.

My taste is for less micromanagement. And I'm happy there's a mod that caters to that preference. Everyone wins.
