So I'm trying to play CK2 for the first time, without any DLCs.

When I appoint a Court Chaplain, it seems entirely certain he will decide to study a secret religion within a few years. I can keep imprisoning them but nobody wants to stay Catholic. Fed up with this, I decided to try the option to practice this religion in secret, but that resulted in what looks like a bugged event where pressing the first option would leave the window open (or maybe it re-triggers the same event) forever. So eventually I was forced to press the second option, whatever it was.. Should have screenshotted I guess, but probably someone knows about this event regardless. This seems fairly weird and bugged at the same time, is there a starting option to disable this secret religion stuff or is my only option to go edit the event away? Or is there an in-game way of preventing it?

Joke aside, there should be a game rule when you start the game - secret societies. TURN THIS SH*T OFF, save it in a slot as default rule and if they ever patch it you just might check it out later. In an already running game you got no options if its ironman. If its not, you got to savefile edit it.

That's why I make a Dominican chaplain. He cannot join secret cults that way.... I have yet to see if what the tooltip says is actually true: 'gets bonus at hunting heretics'

The problem, as I've mentioned in multiple threads, is that there is no way for an AI to convert away from a secret religion - so eventually everyone in your empire follows it.

I did make a suggestion to have a decision to switch away from a secret religion if a) you had good relations with the head of your dynasty and b) the head of your dynasty was not a secret religionist. I think that would fix like 90% of the issues currently with crazy secret religion spread (including being unable to de-convert your own family).

But until they come up with something it's really not fun to play CK in a place where a secret religion is likely. It's just crazy overwhelming.

IIRC, the options are the imprison him, openly convert, and a new one to secretly convert-which option is causing this bug?

man wants help, whats wrong with providing it

As for chainguns question the best methodolgy is to get the MA of your public relgion up and the MA of the hidden one down, get a Dominican as gans noted.There is one hidden blessing with secret faiths...only one can exist in a kingdom at a time. this allows multi-faith empires to be easier to deal with

1. That has a low chance. 2. It's not repeating, unlike the found a <insert heretic religion here> bible stuff where you get a choice between going secretly heretic and 100 piety.

At least this one happened as it was the one that bugged out. The connection to cultural tech study wasn't obvious to me.

Yeah, when it comes to chance and RNG, it's of course possible to be very unlucky. When I chose (after many imprisonment tries) the second option to follow it in secret, the subsequent event bugged out (can't remember wording) and selecting the first option on subsequent event just kept cycling that event (or did nothing).

As for chainguns question the best methodolgy is to get the MA of your public relgion up and the MA of the hidden one down, get a Dominican as gans noted.There is one hidden blessing with secret faiths...only one can exist in a kingdom at a time. this allows multi-faith empires to be easier to deal with

Good to know, I might re-enable in the future. Just trying out the game with a minimum of complexity at first (hence no DLCs, and I'll happily disable complicating settings).

Oh, unrelated question: Alliances left me with a sour taste in that I was immediately called to war that (if I interpret it correctly) I will receive nothing for wasting my troops in. Or is there any way to make separate peaces like in EU4?

Separate peace is not an option (though you might be thrown out of the war if your current character dies), and unless the other party is declaring a war using a CB which would benefit you (which basically never happens unless the claim of a dynasty member of yours in the line of succession is being pressed, you arrange a lot of accidents after the war, or it is a crusade and you are the primary contributor) you will only get prestige/piety/Decadence reduction (if Muslim) and loot. You could preserve your troops by simply not sending them over there (though if you were to use Conclave the ally might get an event because of it that makes it break the alliance), though then you don't get anything at all, but for random wars you don't care about that might be a good option (unless you could put a troublesome vassal or bad heir at the head of a small army and go hunting for doomstacks in the hopes of getting that vassal or heir killed or severely maimed).

The chance for a fix just got THAT much better...*

*Might be remembering things wrong, but I had heard that one reason the Assassinate Button-i.e. the Bacon Button-originally got terminated was because a Dev got involved an a MP Game and ended up being assassinated on the orders of another player.

War is a lot more basic than EU wars theres only a few ways you can get out of a war, though you can easily avoid acting in the war whats soever
1. Your character dies, not a guarantee
2. Youre in a holy war and you change faith (rare)
3. The ruler youre allied to dies and the Alliance breaks
4.Divorce thus breaking yourself from the alliance

Not exactly nothing, you get the prestige and/or piety reward for winning the war. IIRC if winning the war would give 150 prestige, your war contribution is 66%, you get the 66% or 150. Sure since wars can't get anything else what the CB is for, you won't get land but it can be a good tool. Like helping out a dynasty member so he won't lose the throne. On the bright side you can't lose anything either so no real reason to not fight unless you have more important business to take care of.
