Hey everyone, I'm pretty new to Victoria but in my most recent game I've been fighting a lot of wars, so I want to make sure I'm doing my army organization properly. In Hearts of Iron II (my first paradox game) there was a limit to the number of divisions an army could contain before it suffered all sorts of penalties. Is there anything like this in Victoria? If so, how do I know what it is? If not, does that mean I can just stack 20, 30, or even 40+ divisions in one army with no negative consequences?

Also, in one of my wars I was sometimes receiving huge amounts of attrition after defeating an enemy army in their territory, like 20-30% or more, and it was from something called "stacking modifier", if I remember correctly. What is this and how can I avoid it?

Finally, is it possible to un-assign a general or admiral and replace him with a no-name commander? I had a situation where I had my star admiral stuck on a fleet of steamer transports and didn't know how to get him out.

Thanks for the help.

In terms of stacking penalties for number of troops, there's no limit-1 division will receive the same benefits as 100 divisions, so it is not like HOI in that respect.
After you have defeated an enemy army in hostile territory, but before the territory is transferred to your control, your troops will always suffer a very large amount of attrition, and there's not really anything you can do about it (usually it only lasts a few days, though). However, if you're in enemy territory that you control and you're still getting high attrition, hovering your mouse over the symbol will break down what's causing it. Generally speaking you won't get high (>3%) attrition for armies less than about 12 divisions in size, but the attrition rate is calculated using the total number of divisions in a province.
And you can't replace a commander with a generic, no-named one, I'm afraid.

you can if you have at least one leader in reserve, which is why I always tend to hold off appointing any leaders to armies or navies unless I am about to declare war or just have war declared on me. You can appoint and rotate leaders at any time, and leaders do not do much for units during peacetime, so leaving them "in the bullpen" waiting to be appointed makes sense.

You could merge/reorg the transport fleet with a warship fleet; just move all the transports to the warship fleet and all the warships to the transport fleet.
