As Byzantium, I have just taken this province from the Pope. The primary holding in it is the Bishopric of Rome. I am unable to grant just the church holding to a clergyman without granting him every other holding in the province. How can I go about mending the great schism (this is the last Pentarch I needed) without giving this Bishop every holding in the Roman province?

Give the county to one of barons (castles) in the province. Or revoke one of barons, so he gives his castle to you. It'll revert to feudal after that.

Is the Bishopric of Rome the only holding in the county that is vacant? If it is, and since it's the top holding, you will have to give the lower vassals to the bishop you install.

If you don't mind taking a tyranny hit, you can revoke one of the castle baronies in the province. Since you hold the county and are a feudal lord, the castle should switch to the county capital, which will allow you to create a bishop that only controls the Bishopric of Rome.

Slight Aside, is there any significant benefit to the 'Make Rome the Capital' decision? Or is it just tyranny free way to move the capital there if you've granted it to someone ?

I think its mostly for kicks/flavor. That, and you'll have a more central capital should you ever get Rome back to true glory and conquer the rest of its lost lands.

Rome isn't a bad county, it has a massive amount of holdings... the downside is the low starting tech. But with dedicated work from quality councillors and using its massive amount of holdings to build tech buildings in your bishoprics and cities, its a disadvantage that can quickly be negated.

Just be sure to invade the county and take it from the pope before he fills it with bishoprics which are pretty much useless. Give me castles(for manpower) or cities(for all that lovely gold) anyday!
