I was playing a France game and realized during a war that Clanricarde - an Irish minor, had become my March. I never got any notification for it.

To give context, I had just - two years before I noticed this - vassalized Leinster. Clanicarde were already a major power in Ireland and had conquered much of the north. I even remember hovering over the vassal acceptance indicator of theirs at that time and it told me they would never accept to be my vassal.

But now, they are my march and fighting in my Italian wars! How did this happen? Is this some new event? Or is this a bug?

You probably full annexed whoever they were originally a march of, as doing that transfers all their non-PU subjects to you.

Nope. Haven't annexed anyone before that. I have been taking chunks off Burgundy and Brittany while tap dancing around an Austrian-Castilian coalition, so didn't want to make things difficult for myself by annexing any more clay till the coalition died down.

Could they have been Leinster's march and got transferred to me when I diplo-vassalized Leinster? But even that seems unlikely as Leinster was a 2PM while Clanricarde controlled all of Northern Ireland and some of the western parts.

You can't diplo vassalize country with any subject (even tributary), there is too big negative modifier

Maybe Leinster had some kind of event that makes Clanricarde a march. When vassal gets the event giving them junior partner or vassal then instead overlord gets the subjects. One good example of it is vassalizing Brandenburg before Albrecht Achilles event https://eu4.paradoxwikis.com/Brandenburg-Prussian_events#Franconian_Hohenzollerns When it fires Ansbach and Bayeruth become junior bartners of Brandenburg's overlord and not Brandenburg itself.
