Hi folks!

I just tried to challenge one of my character's rivals to single combat, but the game didn't let me do it because it claimed he wouldn't accept.
This seems odd, because the description goes as far as telling me what the effects of my rival's refusal would be: some prestige loss. It makes no sense for the game to set what the penalties for declining an invitation to single combat are, only to forbid me from even clicking the button because the target would refuse.
Just to be clear: I don't mind the target declining the invitation (it actually makes a lot of sense, specially if the target has low prowess or the craven trait), specially because there's a proportionate penalty (prestige loss) if they do. What I find odd is that whenever the target would potentially decline, I can't even send the invitation (which means they won't even get a chance to decline and, thus, won't lose any prestige).

Can anyone tell me whether this is a bug or not? Has any other player experienced the same situation? Is this working as intended? If it is, then it kinda breaks the immersion.

I thought about submitting a bug report (and, if people confirm it's a bug, I probably will), but as I don't visit the forums much it seemed better for me to first ask in the general forums if others have experienced the same issue, so as not to submit an incorrect bug report in the case it is working as intended (or in the case I'm just doing something wrong).

Submitting a bug report is probably the best way to get an answer to this. As players we can only guess.

i think it is work as designed.

if the prowess difference is too high that you can only blame yourself if you lose and nobody expect something else why should you gain prestige.
(like a 100m sprint as adult against a baby that can't even crawl)
you only gain prestige if you challenge someone that is able to beat you even if chances are low

i would even go so far that you should lose some prestige if you try to challenge someone who is that low (made a fool of himself) ;)

I'd recommend posting about this in our Bug Report forum so QA can follow up on it and see if this is working as designed/intended.

I don't know if this is intended, but I can't imagine it is.

If the rival you challenge has a 99% chance to refuse, you can send it, but not if they have a 100% chance... ridiculous.
I've modded it so I can send a challenge even at guaranteed refusal, and what happens is exactly what you'd expect: I gain nothing, the rival loses prestige.

if the prowess difference is too high that you can only blame yourself if you lose and nobody expect something else why should you gain prestige.
You don't gain prestige: you are only refunded the prestige cost of sending the challenge.

Just ran into this as well. Did you ever submit a QA/bug report? Honestly I don't believe it should work like this and it kind of irks me that it does. What would STOP my character from challenging their rival to a duel? If I know for a fact he wouldn't accept, I'd challenge him any way and force him to act craven in public (thus losing some prestige) -- cmon PDX, this needs to be looked at!

In ck2 you got a malus for challenging elderly to duels, maybe they just hardblocked it rather than remaking mechanic

Why would it be a bug? You cannot send a marriage request if other side will refuse, make a shieldmaden out of a craven, etc...
You just compared "friendly" interactions with a hostile one.

This is not asking nicely "hey, how about we have an honorable duel?"...
It's a hostile challenge to publicly humiliate the other. Best case scenario, they accept the duel and you win, resulting in them being wounded and gaining stress at the cost of some of your prestige. Or they refuse, they don't end up wounded and gain no stress, but lose some prestige.

What you said is about as ridiculous as saying that you shouldn't be able to kill your enemies without their permission...

Basically "cause I want free stuff".
Now I'm really starting to think you don't know anything about this interaction at all... this is a locked interaction which is only available against rivals, and has a base requirement of either a cultural parameter or a lifestyle perk. It's not exactly "free". And in case you don't know that either, it has 2 cooldowns: 5 years between each interaction, and 10 years against the same character.

You rival is Mike Tyson. Your actions? Thought so.
... the opposite, obviously. "Mike Tyson" challenges you, you accept or refuse. It's possible to win duels in this game even if you're badly outmatched, it's just much less likely... and if you refuse, you become much more likely to live longer, but lose some prestige. What's hard to understand here?
