I've tried an POM run as Hamburg. It was quite fun at first. Doing constant Humiliation CB war to gain all the MP for developing, having Ditmarschen as March, and claimed my way to Danzig with the Age ability and sniped them when the TO got attacked by Poland and released them to a Baltic trade port. It's somehow strangely satisfying to be considered a rival by a fully grown Poland Lithuania who actually expanded a bit into Russia, a Denmark with it's Unions still intact and an Austria that got the Burgundian inheritance and Great Britain while your still an OPM.

At some point my dear ally the free city of Bremen couldn't stand my dabbling around as an OPM anymore though, they conquered all of northwestern Germany, became a monarchy and got them self elected as HRE after the league wars. They actually showed a remarkable skill in AE management while expanding in the HRE, every time I checked whether I should ditch them yet to prevent a coalition war, they had like 48 AE with everyone.

@Dominion did you managed to become the OPM Hormuz and what achievements are realistic reachable?
Questions to all as far as I have seen only OPMs at the seaside are of interest. Whats about the military/naval limits. Another problem seems to be how do you avoid of getting a new province. Could one always transform it to a march or a vassal? Is there als a limit how many an OPM can possess?

I'm still sitting on Nagaur atm. Can't push out one achievement per day :D

Military and naval limits aren't as hefty. You can keep vassals loyal by developing their lands and turning them into marches. Send officers lowers liberty desire by another 10%.
Marches give 2 force limit each. colonies 5. Marcher Lords (Influence ideas) doubles the value.

There are no problems regarding your safety.
You're either part of the HRE and are protected by the emperor or sit on an island, meaning anyone landing eats a -2 modifier whenever they land.

Maybe I'll write an AAR once I get to it. For now I need to finish Nagaur :D

but is that the island you want to be? Hormuz?

how should one do this, by diplomacy?
And once again which of the many achievement you are targeting?

Nagaur is a different campaing and the only achievement I want from Hormuz is Strait talk.

Send officers is a vassal interaction only available to marches.

  • -10% Liberty Desire
  • Overlord pays 33% of subject's army maintenance
  • March gets +20% Land Morale and +5% Discipline

Send officers only works if the march is less than 25% of your development iirc. That's hardly going to be the case if you are an OPM...

I feel like the only way to play a non-HRE OPM game is to make few, truly massive vassals and use economic ideas / development to keep them happy. It should be viable as long as you don't have too many vassals...

But at that point, I'm not sure what the benefit of playing OPM is anymore :D

Nah, it only loses its bonis (morale, discipline).
Liberty desire will get reduced no matter what their development ratio is.

I don't see a point in doing it either, at least not for normal runs.

It's just that Strait talk doesn't require you to be active and since I can't figure out any other achievement to combine it with I decided I'd reduce myself to that island, build a few heavies, disable autopause and speed5 through it.

Till now I always played more or less german powerhouses what in the last quarter of playing is almost boring.
So I would like to start a new game with an OPM. There are several canditates:
1. Lübeck, at the beginning rich and powerfull, many good relations, but up the midtime mostly too big and vanished mostly in all my games soon or later(as in history)
2. Hamburg, not so rich, but with a bigger population and several OPMs surround
3. Bremen, the smallest and poorest, but also with some potential
My aim is not to build Germany or to become the emperor but I would like to built a strong province with an advanced developement no enlargement but if possible some good colonies like eg in Canada or Caribic.
What are your advices?

Strait Talk

As Hormuz, have at least 10 diplomatic reputation

No need to do anything else.

Maybe I'll vassalize Timmies and feed them Persia, maybe I'll grab someone in India to feed, but neither is actually planned right now.
Will probably build 10 heavies and develop my province. That's it.

Nobody in the region has a navy, meaning nobody can ever cross either strait. You can do whatever you want as Hormuz.

Try to get Arabian coffee, i think beating both Mammies and Ottomen with Hormuz is your cup of tea.

Now I started a game with Hamburg. Unfortunately(?) there are several surrounding OPMs. How can I arrange an alliance with the emperor to avoid being demanded back as "unlawful territory" when trying to conquer one of them? Or must I wait till he is involved in bigger war?

He can't demand unlawful territory if you're at war or the province has already been cored.

Declare war on your target, fully siege them down, declare on someone else, annex the first nation, core it, peace out of your second war once the province is cored.

Declare war on your target, fully siege them down, declare on someone else, annex the first nation
so eg I want Dithmarschen which is allied with Saxe-Lauenburg. 1. I produce a claim on it, 2. enlarge my army, 3. and fight a battle with both, 4. besieging Dithmarschen and (?) Lauenburg too or closing immediately a peace with them while annexing Dithmarschen?
