Was it the War of Spanish Succession that was the first war to occur on three continents. If that's not a World War, I don't know what is.

Now as for trenches and mustard gas...

I would have thought the ancient world holds the claim for the first war to occur on three continents... For example, the Octavian-Antonine civil war that ended the Roman Republic touched on Asia (Minor), Africa (Egypt) and Europe (Greece).

Indeed. If your definition of a world war is "like WWI or WWII", then yeah, only WWI and WWII are world wars.

I have tried once to create a world where a world war would be possible in EUIII. I had a nice France, Great Britain, Austria, Spain, Netherlands, Italy and Portugal, while being an expansionist Scandinavia (with much of the Russian empire and German holdings as well). However, nations always ally up in ways wars won't happen. All the colonial powers were allied, so no large colonial war ever happened and no one started a war on European ground because the AI had most of its armies in Asia or America. I probably was too strong as well.

Interesting point. Alexander's campaign against Persia would have touched three continents as well.

I would consider fighting in the Mediterranean Basin to be one zone or theater, whereas the Seven Year's War had many theaters spread across the globe.

But three continents is three continents. Was there fighting in South America and Africa in the Seven Year's War as well, which would push the continent total to five. Now that's a World War.

Yeah i agree completely, i hate it that it's not known as WWI, becuase it really was the first World War. Also, it annoys the shit out of me that most of my fellow Americans call it the "French and Indian War" and think the extent of the war was Colonists+GB vs. French+Indians.

Of course, if we called it the 7 Years' War, we'd have to explain why it lasted 9 years for us. ;) Complain about the fact that many Americans don't know about the European theater if you want, but different names makes sense. We started it first.

You'd probably can in EU III if you get the alliances right. But even then, nations peace out if it is good for their own, while in WWI countries didn't stop fighting unless either their alliance 'leader' asked for armistice, they were totally worn down or some internal troubles would call it quits (Russian Revolution)

That's over-stating things. Separate peaces were completely possible. After all, the war "only" lasted 4 years; you can keep an EU3 war going just fine like that. Russia, as you pointed out, signed a separate peace and Austria tried to negotiate one.

It's true the small states didn't negotiate, despite occupation. If you really want to model it, I guess in EU3 terms they acted like vassals.

in theory a war between the British Empire and the Frech colonial Empire at its biggest lenghts would be a world war no matter what.

to be honest a simple and quite usual war between the Portuguese Empire and Spain would also be a world war

and now that i think of it wanst the war between the Portuguese Empire and the dutch a world war (there was fighting in America, africa, asia and Europe)

two teams of 7 guys each arranging fist fights on each of the 7 continents does not a world fight make.

They were called World Wars because the entire World was at War, not because the war took place all over the world.

WWM does try to model the First World War.

Emphasis on try. The EU3 engine simply can't handle something that decisive. I played that scenario once, and WW I lasted maybe thirteen months with one province changing hands.

I don't know if you can even wage a successful war in just four years. EUIII's travel time is much slower than trucks and trains.

Still, I think it would be possible to make a world war, not nessesary a WW1-type, but a world war nonetheless. As others said, the Seven Years War is a prime example. And in EU3 if two colonial superpowers got into war...yeah.
