The Reaper's Due is a blast. The new features are awesome, the game runs smoothly and the new rules give us the option to play the game we want. You did a good job there, Paradox. Yet, there is one thing that bothers me. The fact that my prisoners are freed after I "have fun" with them. I find it very immersion-breaking, but, what is more problematic, is that I will be treating this fun new feature as I treat the byzantine blinding and castration, I won't use it.
I was playing as a lunatic, cruel ruler last time. I was at war and I captured my enemy. Since he had been the first to attack me and the one to provoke all my neighbors into doing the same, I wanted revenge. So, role-play oblige, I tortured him... only to see him freed and the war unfinished.
So, Paradox could you please consider to change that. Maybe replace it with a cooldown if you want to limit our pulsions or have the prisoner be freed after a certain number of tortures. Or, just let us have fun as long as we want.

I really don't plan on doing much torturing honestly, but I also thought that was highly strange. Once I've taken it upon myself to strap someone to the rack, chances are I'm not letting them go on good behavior.

I would like more before realising them, maybe three racks and you're out?
more unique pictures when torturing and executing would be nice too, I want to see and hear my prisoner getting gored by a boar :p

From a modder perspective, I've had this frustration myself. I created a custom event-based ruler who enjoys capturing and imprisoning random NPC's. That's the easy part -- the hard part is every time the guy tortures them, he releases them! I suppose I could code it so the guy quickly imprisons them again, but that kind of defeats the point.

I agree with this 100%. I also find it very immersion breaking to have them released immediately. We should be able to keep them locked up as long as we want. Just put the torture on a cooldown, & give a % chance for a bad trait to happen to the ruler every time they torture someone. (Cruel of course, but also maybe arbitrary & some others....)

The way I see it the "Torture" option is considered punishment for the deed that got the character imprisoned. And, most probably, the event that gets the character released would be the harshest of a series of "treatments". It was not unheard of to have prisoners released after blinding or the removal of limbs in the era, from what I remember. And if I'm correct a Cruel ruler can still get the event to simply torture their prisoners "for fun", which is enough for me personally - one option is a legal punishment, the other pure sadism.

Well, modding the Cruel/Impaler torture event to be more common should be easy... Maybe turning it into a decision? :D

One of the problems with this is tuning the AI to use it in a reasonable manner. If torture could be prolonged indefinitely, your own character might end up in prison and get tortured over and over again, surviving for decades, giving you a regency for decades.

Also, as VoodooEconomist pointed out, torture is defined as a punishment, not as fun-time pastime.

How about an option as the torture is completed? One "Hope you learned your lesson" option setting them free and one "Hang on, I'm rather enjoying this" option that will keep them imprisoned. The second alternative could give you tyranny equal to an unlawful imprisonment (if the captive is a vassal or courtier) or a 50-100 piety/prestige penalty. Perhaps a -10 general opinion modifier (Torture for pleasure: Torture is no longer about punishment for this deviant) as well.

Another decent solution would be to increase the risk of death for each instance of torture. Perhaps 5 % the first one, 20 % if already injured, 50 % for any future attempt. You could possibly use the new court physician here. An evil physician might help their liege to keep their captives alive (or if kind, might end their misery). That way you probably won't end up in an everlasting regency.

Consider please that we are talking about a game where byzantine rulers were (and still are) unable to use blinding and castration in a reasonable manner, using it on almost every prisoner, and driving their piety into a deep negative. It is rather absurd to assume that the AI could handle a far more complex system like you proposed, unless a huge effort is made to improve the AI. Given that other parts of the game have much higher priority from a balancing perspective - from combat AI to marriages to building priorities - i very much doubt that this is going to happen.

I get your concerns, but the option is really more for the player's benefit than something the AI would entertain. It's not as if we've got a problem with the AI arresting people without cause and racking up tons of tyranny. Why would this be any different? If the game makes the AI treat the event as an unlawful imprisonment, then why would it be any more of a problem? Have you ever seen the AI arrest people without (legal) cause? I thoroughly agree with you on byzantine rulers though, they really need a behavior fix.
The cooldown + limited number of tortures are the best solutions
A cooldown is reasonable (just as carousing, torturing is exhausting) but the limited number of tortures seems arbitrary, unless of course the limited number is due to the eventual death of the torturee (is that a word? I hope it is a word) in which case it would work just fine.
