Could Scotland get a Highlander special infantry unit, please?

Hi. We all know that the Highlanders were extremely good infantry soldiers. Tough people, right? Well, anyway, I guess Scotland should be able to recruit this special unit (with a fancy uniform too!) from their provinces with Highlander culture. That is, what would be Gaeldom. One infantry unit every 9 dev, rounded down. It might get -10% shock damage received / +5% morale, while costing 10 mil mana each. Besides of being historically accurate, it should also help Scotland a bit in its struggle against England. Thank you.

Eh, I don't think Scotland really needs it, Scotland during EU IV's time wasn't really a military powerhouse and while some formidable regiments came out of Scotland, them getting an elite unit is pushing it

Western Europe should be Colonization focused in the game in that era and should so reflect in their ideas. Most of them do. Scots too tried to colonise but unfortunately none of them succeeded until India was available which in fact in a way cemented their union with England. Its easy to find a disproportionately high number of Scots being recruited to lucrative jobs in India via HEIC that actually brought riches to the region. Scotland is kind of okay as they are.

I'd rather see Scottish ideas be updated, they're kind of weak, now I know Scotland wasn't the most formidable Kingdom, especially during EU IV's time, but they could definitely be tweaked. I'd like to see some more military buffs to their units, currently they have none, and ideas like -10% Ship Cost is horrible and the -15% Aggressive Impact is useless for a country like Scotland which is on the island of Great Britain, +10% Tax is always nice but development is so low in Scotland and Northern England that it really isn't worth it, -10% Stability Cost because of "Comets" is a joke and -5% Land Maintenance is hardly a bonus. I mean I'm fine with Scotland being weaker then Gaeldom, but it definitely shouldn't be dominating it. Galedom gets +15% Morale, +1 Attrition, +10% Siege Ability, +15% Shock Damage with +10% Manpower, +10% Manpower Recovery and +25% Garrison Size just to help them hold out in war longer with more men, while Scotland just gets +1 Leader Shock, so just add 1 to the dice roll in Shock phase which becomes useless late game, +33% Land Force, (lol how I can afford that big of an army), and +20% Manpower, (where am I putting these guys). But England needs better military ideas too, they are weaker then they should be. Overall they just seem intent on making the historical British countries weak on the military front

I don't disagree. But, again, all that can coexist with the special unit I propose. Scotland needs some damn good infantry pikemen Highlander guys special. And, as you wisely point out, better ideas too. Why choose one OR the other, when we could have BOTH? That is, if Mr Paradox starts working seriously and implementing each and every suggestion we make. Cheers, my good man.

By the way, we also need a Jacobite/Hanoverian war disaster thingy for Scotland, should England PU boss or Great Britain ever have a non-Catholic ruler.

Again, I don't think they need the special unit, remember that Scotland historically only acted independently until 1603, then existed in a union with England for until 1707 where they merged with England to make Great Britain, you're only looking at about 158 years of existing, it's hard to magically spawn a special unit for Scotland, why should they get a special unit? The Highland clans weren't really a unique fighting force that sweeped Europe or had to go through tough and revoltuonary training, it wasn't like Tercios, Jannisaries, Stretsly, Revolutionary Guard or whatever, they were just people who had a fighting spirit and culture and were in general just some tough SoBs in war, not organized unique fighting forces. Ideas would do just fine to show the fighting capabilities of the Gaelic part of Scotland.

Ideas would do just fine to show the fighting capabilities of the Gaelic part of Scotland.

They were used in the British army too, there would be no need to restrict it solely to Scotland. They were famed for their toughness in battle for much of history, the vikings warned to be careful in the highlands because of them and they were also used as a special guard, the black guard, in France. Disregarding toughness seems silly - soldiers fought with each other, not debated.

Perhaps rather than it being tied to an idea, it could be a modifier. The more manpower you have in highland Gaelic provinces, the higher the bonus. This should be for any nation holding a Gaelic Highland province. Could make for some interesting decisions for Britain - keep the manpower high and risk jacobyte rebellions (which should be made into more interesting events and pose a threat of the monarch being restored to the Stewarts if they win/possibly capital moved to Lothian, etc) or devastate the highlands (the highland clearences) by forcibly moving them to cities and shipping them to America, severely reducing the manpower of the Highlands.

No, but they do have Land Leader shock as a tradition, which pretty much covers it.

I'd rather Scotland be buffed in the ideas, they are pathetically weak in land warfare despite their history of being able to at least put up a fight to the English, just the +1 Leader Shock is not enough for the armies of Scotland, preferably the Land Force Limit boost is moved to the end, because frankly Scotland can't really afford max army at start, and they are given the +15% Shock Damage that Gaeldom has, to represent the Highland troops, and this would still have Scotland weaker on the military then Gaeldom, since they also have +15% Morale and +10% Siege Ability

What we need is a special unit with a nice kilt! That will teach the English.

I think you mean Gaelic, that's what the Highlanders spoke, also still not sold on the idea of a special unit for Scotland, once you do that a bunch of other people need special units and if everyone has a special unit of "+10% Shock Damage and -10% Shock Damage Received" or something, then no one is special

"Everyone has a special unit"? Do I need to say that only a few, very few, extremely few, too few, nations in game have special units? Ottomen, Cossack stuff, Indian Rajputs, Manchu banners... Russians have two, Cossacks and Streltzy. While most most most nations get NONE. Yes, we DO NEED MORE SPECIAL UNITS for new countries. We demand a fair share in special units. Scotland, also... erm... Spanish tercios, Persian Qizilbash cavalry, etc.
I also came with the idea of granting France a special Scottish mercenary unit, cheap and strong, as long as they're allied to Scotland/high relations. That would make sense too, right?

Hijacking the thread, but has anyone mentioned a Union of the Crowns event? I complained about that and a few issues with Scotland and its plainness a few months ago, but it did not attract much attention.

Edit: Grammar.

I think it was Common Sense that added kilted units for the gunpowder units forward. Which matches the creation of proper tartans and kilts in the 1600s-1700s.
That's actually a part of the Rule Britannia content pack which gives you Tier 2,3, and 4 unit renders for Scotland.
