So, Fish are kind of covered in both Molluscs and Reptiles, but given its also, city and ship appearance, would a new category that's fish, sharks, maybe dolphins and whales too? maybe a sneaky liir homage portrait too?
in a Marine category work as a Plantoids style DLC?

Themed rather than biological, but really it feels that with how wide the original categories were, themes are the only way to go?

Isn't that how species adapt to Ocean worlds?

Honestly, I'm not a fan of the tiles. Planets can't vary in size much but building cities takes capital which varies in investment to build for differing terrains... And differing species planet preference would changes that.

But if we did that, we'd also want to be able to invest capital into building more spaceports and space cities and stuff. Tiles in space. Sure, it'd be more expensive than building on planets... But real-world tech says that building a space city or asteroid city would be cheaper than colonizing a volcano.

I dunno is my answer.

I can't say yes. I mean when you think about that the first time you think that will be great but when you think about it a second time you see that maybe you have enough "marine" species right now.
Don't forgot that they aren't really marine species coz you build your city on islands, real underwater cities are now showed in the game and that's quite a pity.

True. No fire = no metalworking, marine species would never have progressed beyond stone age (that is, if they have limbs that could pick up rocks, most aquatic species never evolved these kind of limbs)
Some theorize that they could use deep-sea vents for smelting, and use basalt tools until metal working was discovered. I of course love a coral grown spaceship hull.

While our societal development was predicated on fire, etc., etc. I think I'd hesitate to presume that our experience is the only option.

I think marine species could work and it would also be good for observation posts or accidentally running into a underwater species like how we have the underground species event chain.

It's another idea for "alien live" DLC. This game just must have it's own cultural and biological quirks for specific species.

There should be a general thread about discussing different types of aliens. From marine to bacteria-like to energy based

I would say the potential issue would be "desert" worlds. :) Though it could be argued that they live in Oasis!

Massive water domes with the race wearing special water-suits when outside the domes. Basically like diving suits but for land.

Another Issue would be the ships. Ships filled with water have considerably more mass than ships filled with air, which brings some nasty implications with it. Technically they could probably use suits all the time, but living like that for longer periods of time does not sound to fun.

Personally, I really like how SotS resolved this issue for the Liir. If normal physical movement does not work well, just use a different means of movement...

I came into this thread with WH40K Marines in mind.

OT: Marine species pack would be pretty cool, I'm just imagining a materialist, credit lending, shark empire ;). Honestly I think the devs have the right idea in their creativity for species. The in-games races and Plantoids all look really cool, it's just the pricing that's an issue. £5/$8 is too much for a single cosmetic pack - at least, for me.

It's a future, man. You can make breathable liquids so light it can float in air.

Or just have ships designed to have the crew in water pods with feeding tubes and they control everything through cerebral implants while robots do all the extra work.
