The invasion of Mexico shouldn't be a cakewalk. The US was "supposed to" lose the war, according to most 3rd party observers in Europe. Mexico had a quite decent army, actually.

I've certainly never heard that... At best it was a toss-up... but the political situation in mexico was extremely volitile... in any case, I have never heard Mexico was supposed to win... and I am a history major.

The political situation in Mexico wasn't that volatile. Santa Anna crushed basically all of the insurgents except for the Texans.

I don't have any sources with me at the moment, but of course I'm a Physics/Math major. ;)

Jeez, I'd call it a toss-up if the decent Mexican soldiers could of sent an invasion force into Washington D.C. and take the city in one day, or acutally set foot in the US heartland.

It was a totally one sided war.

Majors Battles/Seiges of the War which the US won:

Battle of Monterrey
Battle of Buena Vista
Seige of Veracruz
Battle of Cerro Gordo
Battle of Contreras and Churubusco
Battle of Molino Del Rey
Battle of Mexico City (Chapultepec)

What were some of the major battles that the Mexicans won?
Suprisingly, I found only one... and that was in August of 1846 when the US Army was thrown out of Los Angeles after a month of occupation, but only to return in January of 1847.

I thinmk Rio de Janeiro should be the South American CoT. Rio was the most important port in Brazil. Brazil had in the 19th Century more than 3 times the Argentinian population.
