What is that a screen shot of?

It displays the Cot historical modifier value of each province. The values were extracted from province.csv in the DB folder.

Edit:
Basically it means that the provinces painted in red, blue and white have a slightly better chance to get a cot.

At one time or another, I've seen COT's in every coastal province from Baja to Yukon and from Tampico to Saguenay, but the most common seem to be:

Sacramento, Matagorda, Savannah, the coast from Roanoke-Massachusetts, Nova Scotia, Isle Royale, Stadacone, and a couple times I've seen them in the inland areas adjacent to Stadacone.

As for the Carribean Islands, Puerto Rico, Barbados, Jamaica and Guatanamo seem to hit a lot for me...

Dont know if this is true, but when I play it seems like a new COT will appear every time 29 new provinces are colonized (worldwide). It always happen when december becomes january. Does anyone know more about it?

A new COT always appears at 1st jan, unless it's an event.

Thank you iso.
Do you(or anyone else) know if 29 provinces or something like that is a correct estimation?

I mean if it is, maybe a player (like spain or portugal) should not try to focus so much on building level 10 colonies but rather build many level 1, in order to make a new cot appear as early as possible.

No, I don't know, but I doubt it since almost all of NA is colonized in my current dutch game and there hasn't been any COT popping. Something must be in me having a high TE and owning Zacatecas. There truly is massive trade there.

Well it is 29 provinces counted worldwide, so the new cot doesnt have to appear in NA.

What I usually see, as new CoTs across the world (with a fully colonized map) :
- four CoTs in America (including Zacatecas and replacements)
- one new CoT in South Africa
- one CoT in Siberia
- one CoT in Australia
- sometimes a new CoT in Indonesia (depends who owns Malacca)

That makes, at the most, 8 CoTs (rather, 7, as Zacatecas already exists). But there're over 300 unsettled provinces, so the average is well above 40.

In fact, I doubt there's any fixed limit, since generally it takes a great amount of provinces to colonize in NA before you get a new CoT (and without any CoT opening worldwide), while the very first province colonized in Australia spawns a CoT.

I made som scenarios with the editor and you are right. It is not always 29 that is the fixed number.

A scenario with 1-57 inhabited provinces will get 1 cot.
A scenario with 58-86 will get 2.
A scenario with 87-? will get 3.

So far it is 29. But then I tested with a higher number:

A scenario with 217 provinces will get 7 cot.
A scenario with 218 provinces will get 8 cot.

218 divided by 8 is 27,25.
I havent tried to find any more breakpoints, but it is clearly not 29 between every new cot.

This is interesting. There might even be hidden some mathematic formula that could be found with enough research. I'm truly surprised if location of provinces doesn't have an effect in the number of COT:s

I found this in the file 1419.inc:

# There are 30 possible CoT's in a game. There will always be a minimum of 22 CoT's.
# If a scenario has less then new CoT's will be created by the game.
# The color a CoT is displayed on the Trade map is based on what position it is in.
# Each position uses a color defined in colorscales.csv.
# There are only 22 available colors, so colors are reused starting with the 23rd CoT
# and continues in the same order as CoT 1 - 22.

I counted all land provinces on the map and I got it to 966.
966 divided by 30 is 32.2 which is pretty close to my estimation(29)
I cant understand how you get the average to be well above 40?

What about a Fantasia campaign? I've never played one, but I believe that the game starts without any COTs at all...is that true?
