I think explorers should cost the price of the number of ships they provide. Also, Columbus, THE explorer, was luckily found by the spanish crown but on the other hand we have the case of Portugal were a special facility was in charge of the african exploration. Maybe a new way of getting explorers by paying for a building could be taken into consideration (not too soon in the game not to damage historical behaviours, just for upgrade the playability of countries).
I think ships should cost some MP.
I think conquistadores should cost the price of the units they provide.
I think fortresses should cost MP. And pleeeease. If you kill some of the garrison let it so be for some time. slow recovery.

Calling Columbus "THE" explorer is a huge overstetement IMO. And the Spanish did not find him. He petitioned them, and other countries, repeateldy. Asking them to fund his expedition. They only relented when once the reconquista was finished.

-Certainly, though perhaps there should be a way to simulate the use of foreign manpower in the fleet.
-Not unreasonable
-Fortresses should definitely cost manpower, and upkeep as well.
I am not sure what you mean by the recovery though. If you mean that it should recover after the enmy unsucesfully storms it, then no. The province is still under siege after all.
IF you mean that a fort should not be in prime conditoin directly after being taken i quite agree.

all right, man. quickly!!! name an explorer, now!! :D
What I meant is that some explorers were not "planned", others, like in the case of Portugal, they were formed to be explored. dat is. :)
I called him THE because I think that idea of an explorer event could come because of the way he was found by the crown that you have explained better than me.

you again said:

this one.

Leif Ericson:p

Anyway i think that the vast majority of explorers were sent out with a mission.
Just a hunch though i obviously have no statistics to back it up.

I stumbled on a new land/continent and all I`ve got was this lousy t-shirt.

Afaik the majority of 15th portuguese explorers were fishermen, naval merchants or pirates who were contracted by the Order of Christ (the Master was the fabled Henry, the Navigator, which by the way only navigated twice: to and from Ceuta, when it was conquered) or by the Crown.
Only in the 16th century the portuguese explorers chosen by the crown were of noble birth.
