Cornwall is one of the few remaining nations that still uses generic national ideas, so I thought I would suggest some of my own, with descriptions/explanations.

Cornish Ideas

Cornish Traditions

Naval Maintenance Modifier: -10%
Accepted Culture Threshold: -15%

The Stannaries
The tin mines of Cornwall and Devon - the stannaries - are a fantastic source of both industry and taxation. We must ensure the continued expansion of our tin and copper mining, and with it we will see an increase in the tin coinage paid to the crown.

Production Efficiency: +15%

Dumnonii Heritage
We are the true descendants of the Celtic Kingdom of Dumnonia, and our heritage holds strong through our language and traditions.

Yearly Legitimacy: +1.00

Hundreds of Cornwall
The administrative divisions of the Duchy of Cornwall ensure the stability and continued growth of the realm. We shall ensure the development of each and every Cornish city.

Development Cost: -10%

Michael an Gof
In response to rising taxes to fund a war against Scotland, a Cornish blacksmith rose up and rallied 15,000 men to support his cause. The enduring Cornish would then march on London. The spirit of the Cornish armies is admired by our allies and feared by our enemies.

Morale of Armies: +10%

Prayer Book Rebellion
It is paramount that we do not let the heretic beliefs of outsiders impede on our beliefs. We will even rise up in revolt if forced.

Tolerance of the True Faith: +1.00

Carters of Prussia Cove
The rocky, uninhabited shores of Cornwall are apt for smuggling. We can turn a blind eye, and allow this lucrative flow of goods into Cornish land.

Privateer Efficiency: +50%

Cornish Nationalism
Even the English have recognised our distinct culture and language. As more countries begin to recognise our status as an independent peoples, we can start to have a real impact on international politics.

Diplomatic Reputation: +1.00

Cornish Ambition
Yearly Naval Tradition: +1.00

I hope this, or any set of Cornish ideas really, can make it into the game. Let me know what you think.

Why the accepted culture reduction?

I would've probably used the holy wells instead of the prayer book rebellion as an institution for furthering a firmer faith the rebellion was spontaneous were as the wells have been cultural treasures for some time (though I do understand why you did it).

I don't actually remember why I chose that now... I'm sure there could be something better there, what would you suggest?

I'd agree with you there. The Holy Wells would also be better since it would focus more on Cornish history, rather than English.

1. Actually I looked up cornwall and apperantly the various lords have often melded into the culture or added characteristics to the cornish language so the synthesis might very well be a good argument for your idea.

2. Happy to help.

Oh that's nice, I like that.

I was thinking some recognition of the importance of the fishing industry should probably be included, but I'm not sure how.

Goods produced perhaps?

Here is something from wikipedia about it

The beginnings of a significant fishery in Cornwall may be traced to the reign of King John and by the time of the Tudors had become of national importance. It was much regulated under the rule of Queen Elizabeth I. In 1582 nearly two thousand mariners are recorded for Cornwall and somewhat more for Devon. In 1602 Richard Carew describes the fisheries of Cornwall and Devon as much more important than those of eastern England. Two methods were in use at the time: seining and drifting. In the early years of the 17th century the fishermen of Cornwall and Devon were also heavily involved in the Newfoundland fisheries. In the decade 1747–1756 the total number of pilchards dispatched from the four principal Cornish ports of Falmouth, Fowey, Penzance and St Ives averaged 30,000 hogsheads annually (making a total of 900 million fish). Much greater catches were achieved in 1790 and 1796. The majority of the pilchard catch was exported to Italy. Before the mid 18th century the season generally ran from July till November or December but during the 19th century usually from August to October.

In 1847 the exports of pilchards from Cornwall amounted to 40,883 hogsheads or 122 million fish while the greatest number ever taken in one seine was 5,600 hogsheads at St Ives in 1868.[2]

Huers (cliff top lookouts) helped locate shoals of fish. The huer would shout 'Hevva!, Hevva!' to alert the boats to the location of the pilchard shoals. Cornish tradition states that Hevva cake was baked by the huers on their return to their homes, the cake being ready by the time the crews returned to land. The Cornish lugger was a traditional type of fishing boat and at Polperro Polperro Gaffers were used.

I think The Stannaries should give production not tax, the development is a bit odd to me and the privateer efficiency should be 50%, its not just the smuggling, most of the biggest names in piracy were british 1/2 of them had roots in Cornwall or Devon, they deserve this.

That's what I was thinking as well. Or another naval bonus for what would make sense as a navally focussed country.

I had a hard time choosing between production and tax, it could be either or both. The taxation coming from the sale of tin was probably a pretty significant proportion of the income to come out of Cornwall, but production might be a better choice.

Do you think there would be a more suitable modifier for the Hundreds?

You're probably right on Privateer efficiency, I'm not great with trade and haven't done much Privateering so wasn't sure what a suitable modifier would be. I'll adjust the OP there.

I think the money you gain from production is meant to be the direct levies on the goods produced rather than a nationalised business where the state controlls production.

I would include something to do with the landscape, perhaps a defensive bonus or attrition, its very hard to land an invasion force on most of cornwall, there are only really a few beaches capable of giving a suitable foothold without having to fight up a cliff or being swept away from the tide. Even attacking from Devon cornwall is hard to take, The Romans didnt manage it.

I'm also a bit scheptical of the Cornish nationalism and think maybe a bonus to revolt risk or core cost +100% instead of diplomatic reputation, partly because if you have the privateering it will cause a fair amount of damage to dip rep and partly the Cornish arent trusting of Devon with their weird jam cream scone order and funny looking pasties, let alone people from further away.

Rather than calling it Cornish Nationalism, it might be better to call it something like Standardize the Cornish Language, maybe give it a different bonus like an idea or tech cost reduction like a lot of language standardization themed ideas have.

It's a nice set, though, the more national ideas the better.

That would make senss if that's the case. I'm with you on production being the better choice then, I'll change that. Attrition is a pretty reasonable idea, though arguably not that useful for a nation in the British isles.

That's a fair point on nationalism, it was the last one I through in because I couldn't think of much else, and Cornish nationalism certainly hasn't been nearly as significant as Irish or Scottish.

Rather than calling it Cornish Nationalism, it might be better to call it something like Standardize the Cornish Language, maybe give it a different bonus like an idea or tech cost reduction like a lot of language standardization themed ideas have.

That's a pretty nice idea. I was thinking or something similar regarding to language, taking inspiration from the Manchu alphabet idea.

I don't think National ideas are about being too useful they are about giving a more realistic feel to what the country and its history is.
