Hey people

I recently purchased a copy of Crusader Kings 2 and wondered if it was possible to successfully modify some files. Realising the game runs on Steam I know that it may impede or even completely dissolve my desire to change Cornwall's and Devon's province culture to "Cornish" rather than just passively accept it as "Welsh". It's cool that by unifying Wales, Cornwall and Brittany you can create 'Brythain' - I guess the Kingdom of the true British before the Angles, Saxons, Jutes and so on came over! :p

Anyway, I don't know whether I want to create Cornwall as an independent Kingdom or leave it within the hemogenous Celtic superfaction of Brythain (Wales, Cornwall, Britanny) What I would like though is to add Cornwall as its own independent culture though - as I'm dismayed that it is simply Welsh. Furthermore, I've started playing the game as a Saxon dude called 'Thomas of Bodmin' as its near the part of the county I live but he's Saxon. I wanted to ask what files to access to add "Cornish" as culture and what I must do to get a Welsh/Cornish Count/Duke...

Thanks for hearing me out!

N.B

If you could give instractions on how to modify the game so that the 'Kingdom of Kernow' becomes a createable Kingdom that would be great!

Just speaking of the top of my head here, haven't actually modded these at all myself, but...

Try looking at \common\cultures.txt in your CKII folder, make a second copy of eg. Welsh right above/below it, then just switch the various names. That's got you the culture created, then you'll have to change the provinces and their NPCs.

These sort of questions would belong more in the user modifications sub-forum, though. There's also a lot more expertise regarding modding there.

I unfortunately don't know how to help you.

However, if I were you, I would ask for the thread to be moved to the user modification section. You would get much more helpful responses there!

Hey,

Thank you. Yeah, if a mod slips by i'd appreciate them moving it to the aforementioned location. I'll keep that in mind next time :p
I just thought "New Games, better go to the CK2 area on forums" :L

Anyway, how come I would have to change the provinces and NPCs? How do you do that? So if I add "Cornish" to the Celtic cultures and modify the provinces so they start with it - it should all be done right?

It'll be epic to have an actual Cornish dynasty rather than make do with a 'Welsh' one! :D

"The "Kingdom of Kernow"? As a one province Kingdom? Sounds like a game-breaker."

I'd make it out of Devon, Cornwall and perhaps a province in Britanny if I was going to make it, so that the Kings of England couldn't just add it as an additional crown. Still, i'd be happy if i'd just be able to play as a Cornish dynasty and make do with an uber powerful Duchy of Cornwall before unifying the Kingdom of Brythain :p

Look in the user mods forum. There is already a Mod that does exactly what you want....creates a Cornish culture with its own name list and also adds in some Cornish dynasties, although I dont believe there are any starting Cornish lords, as The Saxons had taken Cornwall and Devon for quite awhile in 1066.

BTW I am also working on a mod for adding Manx culture for the Isle of Man and Cumbrian culture for the strathclyde region of Scotland.

Later,
JESTER

That would be Dumnonia. Kernow may have sometimes been a breakaway independant 'kingdom' but is a small region.

Not all celtic kings deserve to actually be kings. Ireland is full of counts and dukes that used royal titles, as was Wales before they realised it was silly and switched to 'prince'.

Yeah, Devon was definitively never part of Kernow. And a three province Kingdom would still be way too small. And for that matter an English King would still be able to create it since you only need 50% of the provinces to make a Kingdom.

I think the "Kingdom" of Kernow is best represented by the Duchy of Cornwall, which already exists.

I think the "Kingdom" of Kernow is best represented by the Duchy of Cornwall, which already exists.

This is an issue with the Celtic regions, since they use "King" no matter how little territory they held. They couldn't be justified as high-tier titles separate from what they already have, but what you can do without changing gameplay is to localize their titles to their culture, so it shows up as though they're kings. Hold a Duchy in Ireland? Your title is "Rí". Create the Kingdom? You become High-King, or "Ard Rí".

Just create a "Kernow.csv" file in your Localisation folder of your mod and paste something like the code below into it. Change "_irish" to "_cornish" and put in what-ever titles are more appropriate for them. Though I find it hard to believe that Cornish would actually be very distinct from Welsh at this point in time? Not that it matters, since the game is way too modernized in that area anyway. Remember to add a line in Kernow.csv for "cornish;Cornish; etc." as well, so it shows up properly.

In my mod I just made them Breton instead of Welsh culture (as it seems the more fitting of the two) and changed Devon to Breton culture until 1200. Personally I don't think Cornwall needs its own unique culture as it's such a small area and no other tiny parts of the map have unique cultures -- Friesland for example. There's also a good chance they will completely disappear early on as culture spreads very quickly in the vanilla game.

Some of the historical earls of Cornwall are Breton too.

(I've suggested in the bug forum that Cornwall be Breton instead of Welsh by the way).

Cool, it's always more interesting when you add more cultures and dynasties reflecting those cultures.. Thought i'd show you this though:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadoc_of_Cornwall

Cornwall was still semi-independent from London and Anglo-Saxon influence - so long as the English recieved their taxes they didn't mind what the locals got up to. It was only really when the railways were built and became an accessable public service that the dissipation of Cornish 'culture', 'way of life' etc really started to decline and dissipate.

I guess if I were really keen to get an independent Kingdom it would be cool to get a group together and create the islands of Lyonesse, Ys, Isles of Scilly or something - come up as pagan counts or something and when finally when all that is conquered a Kingdom could be created.

My reasons for wanting an independent Kingdom of Cornwall stems from CK1 when I used to ally with Wales, Scotland and occasionally Britanny to challenge England's domination - for else the English have an unfair advantage in simply slogging it over its neighbours..

On balance though, I think the idea of uniting Wales, Cornwall and Britanny as 'The Kingdom of Brythain' is an interesting challenge and I'd probably settle for that - bearing in mind that I can establish Cornwall with its own seperate culture.. I understand why people would like it to be Breton as they're quite similar and is pretty much France's Cornwall, with Britanny sharing a province name Cornouaille. However, in cultural terms Cornwall does have more in common with the Welsh with the Anglo-Saxon term for Cornwall 'West Wales' with Waeles meaning foriegner or something.. However, personally I think its like saying Catalan is like Basque.. They share similarities but at the end of it all it has a seperate and unique feel to it which is why I would love to have Cornwall with its own 'Cornish' culture.

I found the mod Veld recommended to me but unfortunately it appears the link is broken and it simply leads to the game-mod download site's front page :/

Thanks for your feedback guys!
