Coring time decreases as empire gets super large?

As I understand it, coring time is supposed to increase the larger your empire is. In my current Aztec game I'm seeing the coring time goes up as my empire grows till it hits a max of 108 months (with claim). The coring time stays there for quite a while as my empire continues to grow. After a certain point though I notice my coring time is actually decreasing. It went down steadily from 108 to 104, then 98, 94, 84 and now it's taking me 79 months to core. Is that a bug or WAD?

Thanks for the clarification! I have no idea that's the case as in almost all games I quit before 1700 and so have never seen this happen. The ones I continue past 1700 I usually stop conquering and focus on trade instead.
