Hi, I've been experiencing this odd situation:

Often when there's a vassal I can release, that has also cores in provinces that I don't own, upon release some of those cores completely disappear while others do not.

For instance, I released a 2 province Crimea and all her cores in Ottoman lands dissapeared when I hit "release vassal". I released Manchu and half of its cores in Ming's disappeared; the same with my 3 provinces Zhou => leading to odd situation where provinces bordering my Zhou vassal have no cores, but the ones deeper inside Ming still have them, creating a gap.

What is going on?

See the first post of this thread for more details (And the rest of the thread, but it's long. Last couple of pages are interesting.)

The cores may disappear at end of the month, because the timer for a non-existing nation is double that of an existing nation. Hence when you re-create the nation, timers that were previously 500 or 200 years are now 250 or 100 years. If those times are now in the past, the cores disappear at end of month.

You can extend the timers by DOWing a current core holder, before the end of the month in which you released the nation (so always release nation on 1st of the month.) This only works for one core holder, because you can only DOW once in a month.

Note also that there are bugs in terms of when core timers reset, in particular related to Full Annexation. So if you Full Annex a nation, that nation's cores will still have a start timer of 1444 (or whenever you started your game), instead of the time of Full Annexation. Therefore they will later expire on release much sooner than you might expect. This is a bug.

Thanks for the explanation. I hope this fix soon, it's completely ruining my vassal feeding strategy. I'll now check province's history before releasing vassals and calculate what the timer would be upon release.

Hopefully in 1.4, released 14th Jan.

If you're not playing Ironman, then you could do as I do and just mod out all core expiry. I do so partly because it's still buggy/weird, but mostly because I don't like cores disappearing anyway. I think it adds to gameplay to always be able to Release Nations and Release as Vassal, right up until end of game. See my signature if you want to try that.
