Here I am, as Commonwealth I attack Ottomans and take Edirne. The plan is to release Byzantium and return cores to it. It is 1601 and cores will disappear in 1644.

War is over I got Edirne and happily release Byzantium. And wtf happens?
after releasing Byzantium the cores all reset to expire at 1544 and with months end then vanish. now I have nothing to feed to my 1 province Byzantium.

I admit I raged pretty hard after this, is this a bug or WAD?

I had a great game going until this but this killed all my motivation.

It's not a bug, but it's probably not what the devs intended. Currently the cores of nations that don't exist disappear much later than those of nations that exist, all else being equal. This frequently leads to situations like the one you encountered, with cores disappearing instantly as soon as a nation is revived.

I'm pretty sure this is WAD. The idea is that up to 1644 you can release a free Byzantium, but you cannot release Byzantium as a vassal and have it still retain it's cores.

There is a pretty easy exploit to get around this. Peace out with ottomans, wait till the first of the next month (next tick), then trucebreak and DOW ottos. BAM all cores reset to like 1850 or whatever it is.

3/5 stability for a bunch of 0 AE land is an acceptable price to pay in my opinion.

Edit: I don't personally like the design myself. I would prefer no cores to ever expire.

It's a known bug, cores shouldn't disappear upon vassalization. IMO, the timer should in fact extend, because now there's an active nation claiming that land.
