I know this is a question for a "Basic Short Questions" type thread, but do we not have one anymore? I went back several pages and couldn't find it.

Mamluks went to war with The Knights and took Lesbos. Neither Byzantium nor, or of course, I their overlord, was in any way involved in this war. After the war ended, Byzantium's core on Lesbos (which was supposed to have another century until expiration) vanished as soon as the next month ticked over. I've never noticed cores disappearing under these circumstances before and I'm not sure why they would? The Knights shouldn't be able to renounce someone else's core as far as I know. Is this a glitch?

So 1) Byzantium owned and cored lesbos 2) you lost it in a war with the knights and 3) then the core disappeared? Is this what happened?

Not quite, (1) Byzantium owned and cored Lesbos at some point (2) they lost it (but NOT the core) to The Knights, (3) I vassalized Byzantium, the core also remained through this change (4) with ~150 years to go before the core expired, The Knights lost it in a war with Mamluks (I/Byzantium were never involved in this war if it matters) (5) it was after this second war that the core disappeared (not as soon as the peace treaty was signed but once the next month ticked over FWIW)

Depending on the time-frame, perhaps teh Mamluks had a high enough absolutism to reduce the core's remaining lifespan.

How much time was had passed between Byzantium loosing the province and the Mamluks conquering it? (you can see that in the province history). I just did a test and contrary to what the tooltip claims it doesn't look at the last time that the ownership of the province changed. So the core would expire 150 years after Byzantium lost the province if they were never at war with the Mamluks. If the Mamluks have absolutism, the core would expire faster. A change in the culture of the province would also reduce the time(if the culture is not in the byzantine culture group, it would be reduced to 50 years). And it is possible that there was an event that removed the core.

Thanks! This solves it. I hadn't thought about the fact that although it'd been well under 150 years since I'd last been at war with The Knights ... I've never been at war with the Mamluks. So it makes total sense that when the province changed to the Mamluks the 150 year limit immediately triggered. Also this was just generally very helpful because I didn't know about that error in the tooltip, about the province history screen, or about those ways of reducing core duration haha so thank you!
