When you switch religions as ottos now, you don't just lose the government, you lose janissaries.

And pashas, but I don't care about that.

Sunni is mediocre now... but is it still worth the switch to Coptic? Without janissaries, your late game armies will melt.

Shia has all the same conversion strength and piety bar problems that Sunni has. And I have no idea if Shia keeps Janissaries either.

I suppose I could always drown the world in manpower, but still... if they fixed the conversion issues, I might keep sunni.

Yep, you've basically got two options now:

1. If you want to play Ottomans as Ottomans, stick to Islam but go for the tolerant route, with lots of use of Dhimmis etc. Probably staying Sunni is easiest, as then you don't have many heretics to worry about.

2. If you want to play as a generic blob with a strong start and good blobbing ideas, feel free to switch to Christianity, because Christianity generally is the strongest option, especially as a European monarchy. After that point you're 'Ottomans' in name only; even the Osmanoglu dynasty won't necessarily stick around (and indeed you may well want to flip to Habsburg, Valois, Trastamara etc deliberately for PU opportunities). It's a strong position to be in, but bland.

You really don't need the Janissaries to have Ottoman Space Marines. If you're going for WC you're going to have the such great numbers it wont matter, and you're going to be spending your late game points on annexing and integrating rather than ideas, so just stock up on Mil Ideas. If you're just playing around then sneak in Religious, Innovative and Quality and take the policies. Boom, You now have amazing Infantry, Cavalry and boosted morale. All will melt before you.

Ottoman Ideas include +33% Force Limit, +5% Discipline, +20% Manpower Recovery, +15% Cavalry Combat ability

Other countries have to do without a single military idea, how do you play those?
