If the Coptic Pope is landless, you can restore him to Alexandria by giving the bishopric of Alexandria to a miaphysite character. The new miaphysite bishop will handle the title over to the Coptic Pope, and if you are king or above, this will make the Coptic Pope your vassal.

This can also be done for other religious heads. You don't even need to be of the same religion (you could even vassalize the Patriarch of the East if you have Antioch). The wiki gives a more detailled explanation: https://ck2.paradoxwikis.com/Religious_head#Patriarchs

I actually knew that , and that was may plan in the 769 start date, the Coptic pope is landless and as starting as abbyidia, you control a holy site, so my plan was to conquer my way north into Egypt which is Muslim, and restore the Coptic pope

I’ve been playing Abyssinia a bunch of times from 769 start. The key is knowing when to declare war on the abbasids without losing and not depending on light infantry. Ethiopian LI works pretty good on regulars but once they start bringing in camel archers your LI is going to get crushed. Unifying the Abyssinian Kingdom is pretty straightforward but once you have to take the Nubian kingdom you have to be somewhat quick because the Muslims in the kingdom of Egypt will start pushing down and make your advance up the continent take longer.

Make sure you land and vassalize the order of st. Anthony once they are created.

For succession I really like seniority at least until you unify the lands that are divided among the three brothers at the beginning.

Yemen is one of the richest duchies in the game. Aden Sanaa and Taizz are all high capacity counties so don’t hesitate to make a push on them before the abbasids so you don’t have a huge caliphate with access to your heartland

My goal is to conquer all of Africa and kinda stay there and protect it. Want to bring the save into EU4.

Some good advice above. Once you take Alexandria, the holy order unlocks too - with a minimum year like the other Christian denominations. So I'd make taking Alexandria a high priority.

One of my favourite runs involves this, often leave the Coptic Pope independent too, though then he does try silly holy wars. I wonder if the Patriarch of the East still spawns after the latest patches though? Tried a Nestorian run-through and it didn't seem to happen after I took Antioch, though I'd cheated around a fair bit in that game to set it up so that might have affected things.

Nestorianism is currently bugged :( I really hope they fix that in the next patch, but my hopes aren't too high

How is it bugged?

I have no tickets or anything on bugged Nestorianism. But if you tell me what is wrong with it, I'll take a look at it right away so we can have it fixed before the Spring patch.

The removal of autocephaly is an intended change. With the spring patch, their Holy Order should be Assyrian, and the Patriarch will be moved to Baghdad as well. The destruction of their religious head is a weird bug though.

I haven't seen it recently but I'm fairly certain there was some buginess with just displaying where the holy sites are.

Sorry for the vaguary I'll see if I can replicate it and do a bug report later. I just remember clicking Nestorian provinces and even rulers (just to try) and not being able to see the holy sites as white on religious map mode.

That is fine, I have already found the bug. Not something I can do anything about as it is code and not script, but hopefully it will be fixed.

After taking Alexandria and ceding the bishopric of Alexandria to the Coptic Pope, you'll have to keep an eye on him. Miaphysites have no problem with fighting their religious head if they have a de jure claim aagainst him. The Count of Alexandria will declare war on the Pope for control of the bishopric, if the Coptic Pope is the count then the Duke of Alexandria will mess with him, if he's the Duke, then the King of Egypt will knock on his door. Unless you are willing to transfer vassalage of the Coptic Pope to his de jure liege, or give the Coptic Pope vast power, you will have to intervene to save him routinely.
