Greetings,

I would like to see a cooldown on Centers of Reformation so that we don't see an immediate conversion attempt after we've restored one of our provinces to the true faith of our nation. To use an example of how silly the current method is, I am playing a game right now as the Papal State. Three (sometimes four) centers are constantly and simultaneously converting my northern Italian provinces (I can't do anything about it despite being Counter-Reformation and the Defender of the Catholic Faith because of my lack of a border with the offending heretics). As soon as I convert one back, the center immediately resumes converting it to Protestant or Reform Christianity.

If I've restored one of the provinces to the true faith of my realm, I shouldn't have to worry about an immediate conversion attempt. The religious fervor malus of 8% is supposed to prevent immediate conversion back to the true faith, but that should work both ways. If we can overcome that penalty and restore our state religion, the Center of Reformation should have to wait until the original religious fervor modifier expires before renewing their subversion. Instead, the religious fervor penalties stack, giving unrealistic barriers to maintaining religious unity. There really is no historically plausible reason why missionaries from northern Germany should be able to infiltrate northern Italian provinces and cause a -16% conversion penalty.

I can understand the goal of trying to give the Reformation some advantages to prevent it from being crushed instantly, but the current system leads to implausible situations that simply do not pass the laugh test.

Alternately, please grant a CB that would allow us to wage war on any country harboring a Center of Reformation that is mass converting our provinces.

To give some figures:

  • I have 35 provinces, 2 of which are in the Middle East
  • Centers of Reformation have converted my provinces a total of 43 times
  • Parma, Cremona, and Ferrara have been converted from Catholicism 3 times each
  • The year is only 1554
  • The Reformation Centers are Waldstatte (Switzerland), Aachen (Aachen), and Koln (Brabant). The Protestant Centers are Lubeck (Hansa), Bohemia (Bohemia), and Oldenburg (Oldenburg)

Note: I have force converted Switzerland back to Catholicism but they are unwilling or unable to convert their province with the Center in it, so I'd have to invade them once the truce expires and take the territory, converting it myself. To stop any of the other Centers, I would have to declare no-CB wars, illegally take the provinces, then convert them while they are non-accepted cultures, and sell them back or something. Unfortunately, 2 of the 6 Centers are in Lubeck and Bohemia, so they are too large to force convert and can't be taken in war. The whole process would take 2 stab per nation since they aren't allied to each other... but they would of course join a huge coalition before I could get past the first major no-CB war in the HRE (which the Emperor, my ally Austria, would never support).

Also note: I'm not raging; I just took Humanism and I'm going to sit it out (or just get my Holy Trinity achievement and quit that playthrough). I just think the current system is pretty wonky - particularly since there are only 129 Protestant/Reform provinces in the game. A full one-third of the conversion attempts from Catholicism should probably not be happening in the Papal State... and if they were aimed at me, they should not be able to get the ridiculous -16% to conversion penalty.

I'm having the same problem with northern Italy as the Papal State. Couldn't religious zeal work both ways? (Related idea: If not a cooldown, then a modifier making it difficult for centres in one cultural group to convert provinces in a different cultural group.)

Yes please.

To look at it from a different perspective, the current mechanics make internal religious strife boring for nations with a center of reformation. E.g. as Protestant England with a Protestant Center of Reformation in London, Catholic Zealots become very non-threatening. Every province they capture and force-convert is immediately targeted by the CoR and re-converted within months.

Religious rebels capturing provinces should be a serious problem that takes years to deal with, but it just isn't now.
