How can you tell exactly how many materials you need to send to keep your armies running? I know that if, in the convoy screen, your convoy data is red, that means the convoy won't be effective (though what this is supposed to abstract or represent, I have no idea). But sometimes, even when all the convoys are operating properly (all white text, no red), I see that my armored and mech and air units are not getting oil. If I up the number of conovoy transports significanly, then their little oil icon turns blue, and all is well. But I don't want to create bigger convoys than I have to, or send more oil than I need to. How can I tell the minimum that is needed?

I thought that each unit states how many supplies it uses in normal operations. Of course when they move, they will use more, as well as taking on replacements. Mechanized units will use oil when they move, so what I do is to try to stockpile supplies, then they will be ready when they attack or move. I don't know how you could really manage it precisely to get it down exactly.

This is no doubt a very, very stupid question, but -- how do you stockpile?

Just wait - when ressources "pour" in they are automatically stockpiled at your capital.

NOTE: If you play as, for example, the UK, which has overseas possesions, supplies are also stockpiled in Indian harbor cities. If these are shipped home by convoy, they will be stockpiled in London.

Lots of good convoy tips here ! :)

As Germany, I have invaded the UK. My initial beachead was Southampton, and I have a convoy running from Wilhelmstrassen to Southampton, carrying supplies and oil. When I look at the supply map, I see a little icon in Southampton (which I assume means that this is where my UK stockpile is, and also that all my units that are active in the UK are supplied through this point. Corrcet?). But I can't find out how many supplies / how much oil I have stockpiled there. How can one tell?

You can see how many resources you have in a place in the industry menu, the one with the IC sliders. Just after the four sliders all your provinces with resources are shown. I hope it can help you.

I don't think he could have missed that  . What patch are you using?! I think that window with ports and stockpile was included in patch 1.03 or something. If u look in manual, CD folder window isn't there :) , so guessed was implemented in a later patch. current is 1.06.

If you look at the unit stats for your mech and pz units, you can see how much oil and supplies they need. You also consume more oil when you start moving around.

Oil and supplies are checked daily at midnight. You get up to the maximum that your troops need if you have a lot of transports. If the mobile units start moving during the day, however, then this midnight calculation is too low. That's one of the prime reasons you end up with too little oil despite using lots of transports.

The best way to handle it is to oversupply the situation with massive convoys. Each transport carries two oil, so send 200 transports. Check just before midnight. If your troops have been moving that day and there is still oil at 2300, you have enough oil and might be able to cut back on the transports. If oil is out at 2300, however, then you need more transports.

No one gets this right unless they routinely have hundreds of idle transports that they can just dump into every newly conquered area. Supplying remote land units is not routine in HOI and it wasn't that easy in WW2. Even the USA ran out of oil for the Allies after the Normandy breakout (Operation Cobra leading to the Falaise pocket). The USA started the Red Ball express to keep things going better for a while, but eventually they ran low on oil and had to choose between Patton and Monty for one major operation.

Remotely supplying units in far flung places was historically never an easy task and it is never certain in HOI.
