Converting non-controlled countries

Is it possible to convert a country (or an a.i.s capital country) to a different religion by placing your Inam or priest there? As a muslim ruler I would like to convert a.i. to Islam by putting my Inam there and hopefully then the duke or whatever will convert and I can offer vassilization to them.

Is this possible or will it just cause unrest?.. Also if it is how long would this take ( I know the skill of the priest would come into play).

If I remember right you could put him there but he didn't really do anything as his mission didn't work there.

It's possible, but you had to place your priest within the same realm. In my 1.06 game, I was able to convert Constantinople to Catholic as a Catholic vassal of the Orthodox ERE.
