Hello girls and guys,

Playing as germany, I noticed I can convert my Ju 87 Stuka to Bf 109. While I realize both use the small airframe, still it makes no sense to me...

What do you people think? Does it makes sense getting those crooked wings straightend out, or ?

If I recall correct, I think I can also convert my He 111 to Bf 110.... I.e. medium bombers to heavy fighters.

Thanks in advance

There are many things you can do. I mostly do things that could be done in real life, doing real life impossibilities in a history-based game feels cheating.

There were many multi role planes, although Stukas could not be converted to fighters. The other way was possible, light fighters could be used as CAS, Bf 109 variants included.

The same medium frame planes could be used as bombers, heavy fighters, (land based) naval bombers and reconnaissance planes; for example the British Mosquito and the German Ju 88 performed in all these roles. So, you can (historically) convert a medium bomber to a heavy fighter even with the same model name, just change variant.

Theoretically, the Ju 87 could have been converted into a fighter, maybe not a very good one, but a fighter none-the-less. After all if the Ju 87G could have a pair of 3.7cm AT guns, it certainly could carry 2, 4, or more extra fixed, wing mounted MGs.

Thank you for your replies guys.

The thing is that the game treat them as the same chassi, hence being convertable makes sense. It's not a major issue for me, just thought it was a little bit woozy at first. In real life to convert a Ju 87 to a Bf 109 would be a bit... enthusiastic? Or the Bf 110 to a He 111.... now, that would have been an enlargement...

But it's a game, so it is based on same airframe just like the tank designer works with the same chassi.

Basically the airplane names are flavor names only... You can easily create a copy of your fighter and rename it Ju-something, change the model then convert your Ju-87s to that.
That said, I would love to have more variety to represent historical variants within the designer, and wing shape is one part of that.

Yes, Stuka could be used as a fighter. Before installing 3.7cm AT guns Stukas had already got two 20mm gun on wings and the gunners defensive MG was upgraded to a fastfiring twinbarrel. The best Stuka-pilots, most notably Rudel and his gunner, shot down many enemy fighters with his Stuka. Rudel could turn Stuka tighter than the Soviet pilots turned there fighters and his Stuka was never shot down by a fighter (but many times by the AA).
