Well, you save yourself the cost of raising troops again when you need them. And the time for morale to recover should be shorter than to build new troops. On the other side, you can disband certain units that you don't need in special locations, whereas the payment reduction affects all of your armies.

Always lower army and navy maintenance in times of peace. It just takes them a month or so to regain moral, so it's really no big issue.

I almost never disband units... seems like such a waste... :)
I put my naval at 50% at all times except when i need it to fight in a war (which doesnt happen too often, im a land man :) ) and keep my land at 50% during peace when im not calming down revolts or neutralising natives...

Well, who knows? If you're fighting with superior numbers or against an enemy with lower land tech or if you're reformed/shiite against a non-reformed/shiite or if you're not fighting at all and lay siege or go for undefended spanish colonies..... then you can win a war without caring too much.

Moral is the key for winning in battles. An army with lower morale facing another one of equal size/land tech will (nearly) always loose.

At half maintenance, if you don't expect to get into a war within 40 years (480 months) it is cheaper to disband army than to keep it.

But if you disband your army you will quickly get into a war, as a victim.

Catch 22.
