Playing as King of Germany, I busily took over many pagan provinces north of Poland. Some I granted to my courtiers and some I kept. Once my son came of age and completed his ecclesiastical education, I created a bishopric for him and then also granted him multiple provinces surrounding him. Finally, I granted him the title of King of Lithuania, which he took on as Archbishop of Lithuania.

My question is: if he were to be elected Pope, would I still have a favorable chance of being able to control the Papacy, considering he is my son, or did this possibility disappear when he ceased to be my vassal and took over Lithuania?

The thing seems to be bugged at the moment... but according to the manual the closest relative of the Pope is supposed to be the controller.

The Pope helping your relatives into Bishoprics seems a little overdone too. In my current game William the Conqueror controlled the Pope early on and since then every single Pope has been controlled by someone in the British Isles.

Yes, that just happened in my game. The Pope died of old age and the Bishop of Bremen was elected the new Pope, and the King of England became his controller. I went to look at the list of successors for the new Pope, and when I saw that another bishop was listed above my son, I had that bishop assassinated. Within a few years the new but old Pope died of old age and my son, the Archbishop of Lithuania, is elected the new Pope. Sure enough, instead of I, the King of England became his controller again...

I agree, this needs to be balanced. In my game as King of Wales, the first few Cynfyn popes were bug-related anomalies (controlled by other rulers for some reason). But the line of Welsh popes continued until I finally got controller (only to have it backfire by having my 4-year-old heir to the throne AND his younger brother stuck in bishoprics outside of my control... but that's what the DIE cheat is for, not to mention the exit/reload :) ).

So the pope is now outside of my control, but they are all still Welshman of the Cynfyn name appointed from the pool of useless courtiers who were drawn from my court to fill bishoprics while I was controller.

It should be more random or take into consideration the bishop-in-question's prominence (lands? prestige? piety?) as well as his liege's.

Although there were 455 years of Italian popes before this young upstart Pole we have in office now... :)
