Continously Crashing

This is causing me somewhat pain to say as I love this game, but I can't keep playing.

No not because I don't want to, but the game simply won't let me.

It is late 1949 and for some reason the game keeps crashing every few days. The problem started in 47, but then it would only happen about once every few months, but it quickly increased in frequency. At this point I can't play unless I safe every single day, which is quite a hassle.

On the otherhand since I already played this session for over a week and I am moving on to one of the final tasks, I don't want to quite and start over.

Oh and before you start asking me what the bug is; I am unsure it is one. I am not even sure if it is the game or my computer. I don't get an extensive error screen saying what failed, instead the screen just goes black for a moment and then I get the windows message the game crashed and whether or not I want to send the information to Bill Gates.

However if it is my pc I can't imagine what could cause it. Till 47 it ran smooth as hell and I my pc should be fast/strong enough to run three games simultaniously.

Can anyone help me? Even if it can't be fixed, would it be possible to copy the safe game, reinstall the game and continue?

Basically you need to compress the savagame (rar/zip/ace) and then attach it to the forum post, or upload it to any public server on the web and copy the link into a post jere so i can access it.

IIRC megaupload.com has been used by several users...

Ok that I can do, now all I have to do is find the safe games. I have been looking through the maps of the game and can't seem to find the folder safe games.

What should I be looking for?

My apologies for my inexperience, but so far HOI games always ran smoothly for me. And thank you for your help and time.

You want folder \scenarios\save games and there should be two files (one ending .eug and one .eug.cfg) for each save - apart from the ending, both will have the same name.

EDIT: with this safe it will crash after only a few hours. Also I must add I changed something in the database; the contruction time of anti air, radar, and bunkers. Though that is all I did and I did it when it was still 44, so it ran smoothly for 5 years after that.

Anyway I hope this helps as I really want to kick Russia's big butt!

1947 must be problematic. I had a crash in June of 47 this morning. It apparently corrupted the save or something. After the ctd, that save would not even load. Other saves still loaded and ran fine.

Thank you for the kind support but I don't think that is the problem in my case.

It just seems to be some kind of overloading of the game engine. Perhaps a combination of too many units and too much unit movement? I don't get an error screen, the game just quits. I can reload it just fine after restarting the game, however it just quits again.

I believe at this time Japan was defeated so it is possible USA, SU and UK are all simultaniously redeploying their troops to defeat Germany (me)

This might be a problem if it is indeed some kind of overloading of the game engine.

after some testing I believe the cause of the crashes might be in the editted db section.

I made a new install on a new disk and transferred my safe games, the game played fine. Then I transfered the editted db and the crashes began again.

Perhaps it is just a coincidence, but is it possible my editting the db is screwing up my game=

Funny thing: My friend and me were playing HOI2 a bit ago, we conquered country by country, we liberated them all, but afterwards there were more countries at the end as at the beginning and the game began to lag and stutter very hard.

Crashes on me too

It seems to crash on me when i am going from the tech screens. I have had it crash as early as '39, maybe earlier. At first I tried slowing down the speed, as I tend to play prewar fast, but still experienced a crash. Might be other screens as well but definitely aware of tech screens crashing. I get the message that I can contact Bill Gates about it. In my error log it shows as event 1000. Very good game, if I could play it.

reinstalled on different computer

After posting the text about the game crashing, I reintalled the game on an older computer that has less RAM and Video memory and slightly slower cpu, but the game seems to run fine there. Same operating system, XP.

Lurked here for many years under several usernames (different email names), own lots of paradox games, even registered a couple for no reason I can remember. This is about my second or third post under any name.

Always played 36 scenario. Still learning, I don't push things, let the major events play out historically-ish up until all the major players are in the war. Once things get hectic, about 42/43 (usually I play as Soviets or UK) the game starts crashing. Never made it as far as 44.

In my other AoD games, after the first few reloads from the monthly save I grit my teeth, shrug my shoulders and start another game. But this particular game is a lot of fun. Playing UK. For some reason Poland didn't ask to join alliance. So when Germany invaded, no war. Ok, this is interesting, so I wait for them to attack Scandinavia/Low countries/France in 1940. They don't. Ok, so I wait for them to attack SU in 1941. They don't. Ok, so I wait for Japan to attack someone in 1941. They don't. So ok, we have to get creative and make it happen. Only a couple of notches away, so ramp up (down) interventionism so we can declare war ourselves. Takes a while, lots of dissent, but we achieve it in Feb 1942. Declare war, wait to see what happens next.

Not much happens on the Western front. But then in quick succession Russia piles in. Then Japan etc. Then Italy. Then Yugoslavia on Germany's side. Then Nationalist Spain on Germany's side. This is serious fun. Because normally I form most of the Royal Navy's capital ships into a big carrier fleet and a big battleship fleet and use them to whittle away at (thump if they let me) Germany's fleet in 1939-41, Italy's in 1940-42, and Japan's in 1941+, focusing on one at a time but I can sort of take on two at once ok if I send all the carriers to the Far East. But now they're all coming at me at once, plus Nationalist Spain which appears to have a serious fleet.

So we have four credible naval enemies all at the same time and we can't fight them all. Great! What do I choose to lose? Will Seelowe happen (I've abandoned the North Sea)? Will I hold Singapore? Can I contain that nasty-looking battlefleet in Cadiz? Will Gibraltar fall (as it has a couple of times before game-crashes "rescued" me from my own strategic stupidity)? Can I ship large BEFs into Bordeaux, and Marseilles in the teeth of the Italians, just in time to stop the Nats crashing into France from the south as it appears they're desperate to do? Err, no. We just... crash, every so often, and more and more frequently.

I'm running Vista if that helps. Usually running other programs at the same time, ALT_TAB out every so often to check stuff. This time only Windows Mail.
