--------------

This is an random event initially motivated by historical article that French armies could move over a frozen river and attack Netherlands due to extremely harsh winter. I was thinking increased attrition or lowered fort defense for options. But in that case, there would be only one option available. No fun. So I made an event of multiple options.

Target country is Scandinavian culture; country that is NOT Scandinavian culture has a colony in any province in Northern America region; Player does NOT have colonies in Northern America region; Is before the year 1700.

Event Text:

The masses strongly agree with these men, and clamor to travel to the new world. While there are many who would contest this claim, it does make for a rather convenient excuse to launch our own expedition into the new continent ...

Option A: These are OUR ancestral claims!

Gain +50 relations with <Foreign Colonizer>. (( Happy you told the people to shut up. ))
Lose -1 Stability and +5 revolt risk for 5 years.

Event Name: "Queen of the Adriatic"

Faction: Venice

Trigger: Venice owns Corfu (+is a core), time frame is 1500-1580, has fort level 3

Event Text: "Doge, officials have increasingly alerted us to the detrimental state of the fortifications at our stronghold on Corfu. Our maritime hegemony over the Adriatic is in danger. We need bring the old fortifications up to date with the latests standards of modern siege warfare or suffer the consequences of our ignorance!"

Option A: Corfu is the keystone of our maritime empire, spare no effort in fortifying it! (the modifier thus given is labeled "Queen of the Adriatic")

- lose 350 ducats
- Corfu gains +1 level fort (if the fort was lvl2 it gains a lvl 3, if it was lvl3 it gains a lvl 4 - 4 is the maximum, if it has 4 it does not gain any new level) Corfu gains +200% defensiveness
- -33% tax modifier, -x% production modifier (in Corfu it self, not your empire)
- galley combat effectiveness +10%
- -15% modifier upkeep galleys -5% upkeep big ships

Option B: Fix what needs fixing, but leave it at that!

- lose 150 ducats
- Corfu gains +100% defensiveness
- -33% tax modifier, -x% production modifier (in Corfu itself)
- galley combat effectiveness +10%

Option C: Corfu has never fallen before, it will hold!

- Corfu gains -200% defensiveness
- -15% tax modifier, Corfu gains -x% Production modifier (in Corfu itself)

Final remarks:

* The main gist of the modifier is to make the island a cornerstone in your maritime empire, the backdraw is that you ruin Corfu, Venice cared for the entrance to the Adriatic, not the inhabitants of Corfu.
* The modifier should be limited in time untill about 1600-1630. By this date the maritime hegemony of Venice was for all intents and purposes already over - historically speaking it ended in the 1530-1573 period, as galleys became obsolete (yet continued to be used by Venice and other aspirants for Mediterannean hegemony) and certainly the 1570-1573 war with Turkey dealt her a severe blow. The loss of her merchant navy did as such not cripple Venice for she remained one of the greatest ports and became one of the great industrial centres of the entire Mediterannean region. Her port continued to be filled with ships, only foreign ships, no longer her own galero de mercato.
* For gameplay purposes this modifier may either be limited in time as suggested above (in line with history) or perhaps be made recurrent (to signal the continuous effort of Venice throughout the game).

A little History: (disclaimer: not meant to be in-game, purely informative)
Corfu was very much the keystone to controlling the Adriatic, it's mountains provided ample shelter from the treacherous winds that were a menace all across the Adriatic. Many nations tried to control the entrance to the Adriatic, the Turks attempted to do so by building a fortress at the Gulf of Quatero (Cattaro), however this was not the true key. The true keypoint was Corfu, and since 1386 if had been in Venetian hands. Most of the shipping in the Adriatic concentrated itself along this islands, and thus entering the Adriatic generally meant passing Corfu. The Venetians did historically not spare any efforts in maintaining this keystone of their entire maritime empire (for it held the entrance to the Adriatic and made her the undisputed 'Queen' during her heyday). The Signoria realised the importance of the island to her naval empire and spared no expenses in fortifying it. In 1572 the fortress towering high above the Greek village held 700 pieces of artillery, said to reach as far as the Albanian coast. In 1553 no less than 200 000 ducats were spent on the island but little progress was being made. The fact of the matter is that it required the continuous effort of the Signoria to maintain, an effort they historically met, or at least attempted to.

The drawback was that Corfu was laid to waste many times by the Turks, appaling to many a visitor who could not understand how the enemy could lay to waste the entire island under the noses of the mighty fort. Though the fortress held, it defended just that: the fortress, and not the adjacent town and countryside. As a result the population of Corfu which numbered 40000 in 1538 had declined to 19000 by 1588. Throughout the 2nd half of the 16th century the Venetian officials wrote a near endless stream of complaints about the sorry state of Corfu outside the fortress walls, the Signoria from her side did not spare any effort in funding the works at Corfu - though as said despite the great sums involved, not always with great effectiveness. However by holding the fortress and the adjacent bay, she principally controlled the entrance to the Adriatic and it allowed her to rightfully call it 'her Gulf' and label herself 'Queen' of it. Venice truly reigned over the inland sea during these final days of her glory and enforced this privilege on her opponents - christian or muslim - whenever and wherever she could. (Braudel, "The Mediterranean...", vol1, p125-127)

Event Name: The King's New Haircut

Triggers: Western or Eastern Tech Group; Christian state religion; monarchy government type; hasn't previously had this event

MTTH: 10000

Event Text:

Our glorious [monarch name & title] has begun to grow out his hair, unfortunately this has resulted in the formation of a plait on the left side of [his/her] head, a hardened and malodorous mass of hair, lice, and pus. This hairstyle is common among the peasants, who believe it can prevent illnesses by drawing it into the hair. Our [queen/king] is less than enthused by the aroma the royal bedroom and several courtiers and visiting nobles have been said to be laughing behind the [king/queen]'s back.

Option A:
"We must cut the royal hair!"
Lose 10 prestige
Gain 50 diplomatic power

Option B:
"Make the whole court grow plaits, we will be the envy of Europe!"
Gain 10 prestige
Lose 2 diplomatic reputation for 3 years

Option C:
"My hair is beautiful, no?"
Lose 1 stability

Option D: (Requires absolute monarchy)
"We are the state, seize the estates of everyone who dares mock us!"
Gain 1 years income
Lose 1 stability

Event Name: The Royal Touch

Trigger: Country is Catholic AND country is monarchy AND ruler has legitimacy <50

Event Text: Tuberculosis was common in this era, and one of it's most disfiguring manifestations was scrofula, an unsightly swelling of lymph nodes in the neck. In past times, royalty, particularly in England and France, had instituted a tradition whereby they would touch the afflicted area to promote healing as proof of their divine grace and the noble character of their bloodlines. This naturally led to conflict with the Church, as they strongly denied the ability of monarchs to perform healing miracles without divine intercession. Our subjects whisper vile rumors about [king/queen]'s right to the throne, and perhaps we should reinstate this regal tradition to impress upon them the divine favor of [king/queen]'s rule. However, some of our scholars dare mock our [king/queen]'s regal powers and claim that this scrofula will go into remission naturally.

Option A: "The Royal Touch Shall Heal!"
Gain 30 Legitimacy
Gain 10 Prestige
+10% Administrative Technology cost

Option B: "Perhaps the Scholars are Right."
-10% Administrative Technology cost
Lose 30 Legitimacy

Option C: "Healing Power Flows Only Through Royal Blood!"
Gain 30 Legitimacy
Gain 10 Prestige
Lose 40 Papal Influence
-50 Relations with Papal State

Event name: Expand the Alhambra.

Trigger:
Country IS Granada.
Granada owns Iberian region. Capital is Granada (province).
Year is 1650 or higher.

Event Text:
From the blink of extinction, Islam has thrived again in Iberia thanks to our nation's efforts. Crusades are over and we've united all of Al-Andalus and the peninsula under the rightful banner of the Nasrids. However, the old royal palace of the Alhambra pales in comparison to many capitals and even cities in our own realm. The grand vizir has elaborated a plan to extend the Alhambra and the capital to make it into the jewel of our kingdom once again, but hasn't decided on how to get funds.

Option A: "Let us use the resources of the old christian strongholds!"
Madrid loses 1 base tax.
Valencia loses 1 base tax.
Alicante loses 1 base tax.
Barcelona loses 1 base tax.
Lisboa loses 1 base tax.
Porto loses 1 base tax.

Granada gains 10 base tax.
Revolt risk +10 in Madrid, Valencia, Alicante, Barcelona, Lisboa and Porto for 20 years.

Option B: "Use the treasury to extend the capital."
Lose 3 times yearly income.

Granada gains 5 base tax.
Global tax modifier -20% for all provinces for 30years.
A 17 noble rebel stack spawns in random province.

Event name: Science of Comets

Trigger: Year is after 1577 AND a comet event (the stability loss event) has recently happened (repeatable, 33% chance, occurs 1 month after the comet event happens)

Picture: Same one for the comet event

Event Text: The Danish noble and astronomer, Tycho Brahe, made detailed observations of the Great Comet of 1577 which allowed him to determine that the comet's path must have been beyond the orbit of the moon, an observation that would be widely accepted by astronomers and would be used by his assistant, Johannes Kepler, to help formulate his theories of planetary motion. Later scientists and mathematicians like Issac Newton in 1687 and Edmund Halley in 1705 would further the science of comets with their observations of the celestial bodies.

Option A: "Science!"
-10% to admin tech costs for 3 years.
+10 prestige

Option B: "Heresy!"
+2% to missionary chance for 3 years.
+5 Papal influence if Catholic

Option C: "So... all our rivals also saw this comet?"
-1 stability to all rivals.
1 random territory claim on an adjacent rival territory
