Was just perusing the wiki to check up on some stuff and found there's an anti hegemon CB with the following: 75% AE, 75% warscore cost, and 0% dip cost on cede province.
If hegemons werent just a late game WC thing I think this would actually be a really good CB for getting more dynamic states rather than just continuously growing blobs. Relying on hegemony status rather than the hardcap 50+ AE as in eu4 coalitions also means the player has more agency in when they want to strike.

What do other people think about either this cb, or hegemony status being more common in normal gameplay

I've never bothered to become a hegemon. It seems like a mechanic that is meant to aid in world conquest, but my understanding of it is that it makes your vassals hate you. My world conquest wouldn't be hastened at all if I can't integrate vassals and client states.

I really like the idea, though hegemon status would need total reworking. It would need to be easier to take and also beneficial, with the drawback opening yourself up to this CB. Maybe if you have twice the dev of the second highest dev sub with same super-region capital?

Yes if it could be contained to the hegemon of your region, rather than global hegemon it could work, only the latter getting those big buffs. IR has a tags rank give bonuses but also maluses, as well as limiting its diplomatic potential with others

I like the idea of reworking hegemon and making it more common - right now it's pretty much a wasted mechanic. I don't think this CB alone would change much to the dynamics of blobbing, though, because if your neighbours are much weaker than you, it doesn't matter how good a CB they have on you, they just won't declare war.

For it to make a significant difference, it would have to work somewhat like a coalition, ie allowing countries who are not allowed to each other to band together against the blob. But I predict such a mechanic would face a huge backlash, because many players would feel that it punishes success.

A well-made version of this might seem less like punishing success and more like an additional challenge, especially if the AI is subject to it as well. Players might appreciate a way as an Irish minor to opportunistically strike at England together, or to cut a marauding Bohemia down to size in Northern Germany.

I also think being regional hegemon having some kind of buff might help with that too. It's not that you're being penalized by having a bunch of maluses thrown at you, it's that large empires get these bonuses and these penalties to represent how different they are from smaller countries

It would all depend on Hegemon to be reworked, to be a bit easier to fulfill, and to not hurt relations with vassals.
And sadly as a dlc mechanic it's unlikely to be reworked, but it could help create a mod to trial such changes.

I was thinking it kind of works as a coalition, by being a constant cb that allows cheaper annexation or release. But yes it does need a dog pile to weaken a tag enough for its rivals to want to all join in. When writing the op I did have in my mind Venice starting war with Ottomans again after the Siege of Vienna was decesively routed

Perhaps Hegemon could have age-based targets to achieve it, and age-based effects from having it? Perhaps in the Age of Discovery you might only need 150 ships for instance to hold Naval Hegemon, and as one of its bonus it might give you +20% colonial range? Then in the later ages the Hegemon bonus could become much more like what they are now, helping in world conquests. This could ensure that Hegemons and beating Hegemons is a relevant mechanic throughout the game?

Wish there were smaller Hegemons tbh. Like dominant Economic power in Europe for example. The ones we have no are too high and too gamey.

You've practically won by the time you get one and if you qualify for one you pretty much qualify for the others.

umm so i never seen any AI nation take the hegemon? So as a player youll never be able to use this CB? Also, if you are already a hegemon yourself that basically means you are almost unopposed, so the AI will never use this CB on you unless you really screwed up.

umm so i never seen any AI nation take the hegemon? So as a player youll never be able to use this CB? Also, if you are already a hegemon yourself that basically means you are almost unopposed, so the AI will never use this CB on you unless you really screwed up.
So would you support it being redone to be based off the hegemon for the region (highest dev or highest income in a region?) rather than the actual Hegemon mechanic?
