For a long while now, when playing Hoi4 multiplayer, I’ve always seemed to have bad input lag when I go further in the game. When it gets to 39 or 40 it takes as long as 2 minutes to move troops, pick research etc. The lag is always terrible, even when the host lives near enough to me. I honestly don’t know what it is, as in games like COD or GTA I run games smoothly with no lag and great connection so I really don't know if it is WiFi related. One other thing is that when it starts lagging, it shows the pause symbol when time is going forward and the playing symbol when it's paused. I really want this fixed as it’s very annoying how I can't play one Hoi4 game without this infuriating issue. Help would be very appreciated, thanks.

I have a solution, play singleplayer while talking to friends, but not in the same game. It may not be the same aesthetic, but me and my friend do it all the time and have fun.

That shouldn't be happening.
There are a few minor tricks that you can do to help a bit (like banning naval mines for instance). There are other things as well. Each time there is a hotjoin, there is a chance of causing irreparable lag (only fixable with a rehost), so try to limit these if possible. There are also dedicated MP mods that make changes which increase game speed (like removing smaller nations or creating certain special graphics settings).
The host/players living near to you won't help too much (unless actually using LAN) if their internet speed/connection isn't great.
The pause symbol thing sometimes bugs out but shouldn't actually affect anything so long as you can still pause and unpause.
