Bought the Collection and love the idea of the game, really want to learn to play it, but I get nothing but stutter and lag!

Have no problem in many games but EU4 seems really poorly optimised, I am guessing there is problems with getting info anything past Speed 1.

I don't want to replace my HDD for 1 game when I have no issues for CK2 or Civ and those games have plenty of updates late game

I've update all the drivers for my GPU, turned off all the trees\rivers\etc, cleaned up the HDD, lowered resolution, prioritised CPU cores, changed NVIDIA settings. One thing I notice is it lags the most when I am in Diplo mode, it is pretty much hanging at that point!

I would love to upgrade to an SSD but not on the premise for a game which shouldn't be like this on a 2 year old laptop that runs any other game!

Shame because I love playing CK2. EU4 seemed like a really nice alternative to swap between

Are you 100% sure the game is running on your nVidia card, not your Intel? That would explain it.

Basically the game stutters when I pan around the map at any speed above 1, when I am in Diplo map mode the game just hangs and lags, the movement of the ships and soldiers are lagged, there is no fluidity. In other map modes I can just about manage at speed 2 but it is really frustrating to play

When I pause however there is no issues or lags/hangs etc and panning around the map is smooth

Like I said previously, CK2 runs at speed 5 with barely a hiccup without having to change a thing! Only ever pauses when it autosaves

Hope you can help!

This is a temperature problem I believe, the PC is under-clocking both GPU and CPU to save them from damage (note your second GPU-Z image is showing the Intel info, not the nVidia). And the Intel is up to 79c; are you 200% sure the game is in the nVidia ... ?

In any case, clean out all vents from dust, check all fans are running, check the vents are not obstructed by objects on your desk or floor, etc. If these measured don't reduce the temps you might need professional help.

The GPU-Z snapshots are not of the same video board. The pre-loadup is for the NVidia board, and the 20 minutes-into-game is for the Intel integrated graphics. Since your log files indicate you're supposed to run on the NVidia, a GPU-Z snapshot of said NVidia board for the second snapshot would have been more appropriate. ;)

That said, the i7 is running a tad on the hot side. When I run EU4, my i7 temp goes from like 37 degrees to about 46 degrees.

But there is something else I notice in the second screen shot. EU4 is Windowed on the desktop, not full screen. When running in windows mode, most GPU's can't approach their maximum rendering speeds, because the desktop and all the other open applications need some time from the GPU for their own rendering. Not to mention that in windowed mode, the GPU is restricted in it's memory management, as it needs to reserve memory for regular desktop painting, and the frame buffers that go with it.

And, frankly, I have no idea how exactly the two GPU's work together, where one paints the desktop frame buffer (including the final image frames for the EU4 window), while the other GPU does the actual rendering of said final image. In any event, pixels need to be copied over from the internal frame buffer of the NVidia to the internal frame buffer of the Intel for each frame that EU4 renders, slowing things down.

I am going to open up the base unit and check the fan

Yes I saw that I hadn't switched to the readouts of the Nvidia card after 20 mins, so I checked it again myself and it was using the GT540 but still heating up the Intel.

It was in windowed purely so I could see the readouts at the same time the game was open, usually I play in full screen and I get the same results in either mode

I will update once I have opened the base up and cleaned the fans out!

Wow, just saw a video how to open up a K73SV and its like taking apart the whole unit with 100 screws to remember their place!!

Not sure I am up to the task! Unless anyone has some tips of course!

Going to buy a can of compressed air to see if I can clean it out through the vents, if it doesn't work i'll take it into my local computer store

Don't worry, won't risk it if I am not comfortable

As for the intel heating up while using your NVidia:

That's completely logical. From the temp readouts you can see the temp of each of the i7 cores is heating up. The intel GPU is part of the same intel chip, and any heat generated in one section of the chip will, invariably, heat up the entire chip. Yes, there will be localised heat hotspots within the chip itself, but that's not something a regular temp sensor will pick up. Temp sensors pick up the averaged temp over a larger chip area.

After using the compressed air it has reduced the temperature a fair bit, the game is running alot smoother

BUT

It is still lagging and stuttering when in Diplomacy mode, I really don't understand why it is just this mode, the rest is fine at x3 and x4 speed

It just means I will have to pause during that mode but any speed x1 or more in Diplo mode I can barely pan the map or zoom in/out, not sure why this is

Seems the compressed air has cleaned out a fair bit of crap that must have been sitting in the fan

You may want to get the machine professionally cleaned out, and the heatsink compound renewed, and so on.

Diplomacy mode has always been slower than the others, never been sure why, to be honest!

Since I got AoW and cleaned the fans/vents the game has been working really well!

I am due to upgrade at Xmas time anyway, so I will get a better gaming laptop, but I guess to sell this thing I will have to get it professionally cleaned and re-thermal pasted

Thanks for all your help! Really enjoying this new DLC, and the heavy metal music DLC is amazing!
