Constant Freezing + Stained Coats of Arms

I have been experiencing the game freezing constantly. When I bought it two weeks ago it happened, but was very sporadic. However in my latest campaign it has become a persistent nuisance, happening every other in-game-year to the point I'm now with the autosave every semester. What is worse, after I purchased the old gods dlc the game has apparently become slower in progress and it has become even more common such freezes, which whenever happens makes me quit with cmd+alt+esc and restart it all over again.

Since I decided to make this thread, I would like to take the opportunity and solve another issue: every coat of arms in my game appear to have a black stain that keeps moving all around them, as if it was reflecting a black stain.

Does anyone know how to solve these problems?

I'm running the game in a macbook pro ca. 2010, OS X 10.6.8.

I've read multiple reports that there have been more problems with the drivers for OS X 10.6.8 that can cause problems with the game, and recommended was to update to a newer version of the OS (10.8) as it would have much better drivers. AndrewT will most likely be able to help out better with this however.

As for the black stains, if you are running on Steam, could you try verifying the integrity of the game cache to see if that has any effects?

• Open your Steam games library
• Right click on "Crusader Kings II" and select "properties"
• Click on the tab "Local Files"
• Now click on "Verify integrity of game cache"
• Wait until this process is finished, if any files are missing/corrupted it will notify you at the end of the process and automatically start with redownloading these files

I did it right after starting the thread and all files were successfully validated.

If you have the intel 3000 or 4000 video card this is a known problem. Only two things will help somewhat: upping your system memory to at least 4gb, and updating OS X to 10.8 .

For the video problem try deleting settings.txt and /gfx/ from under your Documents CK2 folder.

It's not the Intel HD 4000. Matter of fact I believe it isn't even the 3000, but before that.


Theoretically, my ram is 4gb, but I'm don't know if I can dedicate the entirety of it to the game.


I tried deleting the files you indicated, but to no results. This is what I mean by stained CoAs:


Perhaps just lowering the configurations will make the game more "playable"?

Ah, so you have one of those dual video setups. You can use this tool to determine which one CK2 is trying to use, you want it to use the nVidia card. If it's using the Intel that might explain your problem; you can use that same tool to force CK2 to use the card you want.

Yesterday I cleared around 15GB in my hdd (now I have 24 gb free), repaired disc permissions and then played the game for a few hours with no problems. Today I played it again normally, so i think that isn't a issue anymore. Perhaps it was a matter of virtual memory?

The coats of arms are still stained, however thanks to you and the gfxcardstatus I noticed that it's a problem with the nvidia card - while with the integrated intel card they are fine, even though it can barely run the game (very laggy, very slow). I will see if there's any update to it, but if you have any idea how to deal with it, it would help a lot. And I tried deleting the /gfx/ and settings.txt again, but nothing changed.

With Macs the only way to update the video driver is to update the OS. So again, I'll suggest you go to 10.8 .
