Constant Crashing

Bought this some time ago, and over Christmas thought I would give it a try. Would be OK if the game stopped disappearing and taking me me back to the dekstop, in an instance.
How do you find which version of the game is running. I see there is a patch 1.4?? etc.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Steam automatically installs and updates to the newest version without you having anything to do about it.
You can find the version number in the bottom right corner of the main menu.
