Consistent crash to desktop a few seconds into launch.

Since the manchu update I have not been able to load the game at all. The launcher installed okay, but everytime i click play the loading screen appears for 1-2 secs, then the game crashes to desktop.

I have been monitoring other threads with similar issues, and have followed the advice given there, such as:
- Disabling all mods
- Deleting the EU4 Documents contents.
- Complete reinstall
- Adding EU4 to my antivirus exceptions (I use avast)
- Adding Eu4 to my firewall exceptions
- Running the .exe as administrator

Unfortunately none of these have worked, is there anything else I might try, or do i simply have to wit for a patch?

Same here, although the game only stopped working after their so-called "hotfix", which only seemed to make things worse.

So I'm not alone, yeah the game doesn't even get to the menu, it just crashes after this "hotfix"

Does CK2 still work okay?

If you have KB4515384 installed in Windows, please try removing it.

After the reinstall and the delete of the Documents/paradox/eu4/ folder, did the game recreate it? If not, probably Avast is still getting in the way.

Thank you for your response, but no luck i'm afraid. I don't have KB4515384 installed, CK2 works fine, and yes the EU4 documents folder was properly recreated after the reinstall and delete.

Not working for me either, the same issue, closes upon opening for a couple of seconds... I presume we just have to wait for another "hotfix"?

Yeah I deleted:

-The Mod Folder.
-The new Mod Folder.
-The Launcher Folder and reinstalled it.
-The Game and Reinstalled it.
-The EU4 Document folder
-Put the entire steam folder into exceptions with Windows Defender.
-Put the launcher folder into exceptions with Windows Defender.
-Put the EU4 Documents folder into exceptions with Windows Defender.

And still nothing, the game crashes on the first loading screen with no text to desktop since 1.29.1 was released, it was working fine on 1.29 minus the choppy gameplay.

Hmmm. Exit the Steam app entirely and run eu4.exe by itself. It will still fail but do you see any new errors or messages?

Just done that, i got the following error message: "Steam not detected. Due to the fact that the game utilizes Steamworks code, some features may not function correctly if steam is not running on your machine." Once I click out of that message, the same CTD occurs.

DXDIAG is a program you run from a command prompt or the Windows start menu 'run' dialog box (or 'search programs' in Windows 7 or later). After running it will open a window and start collecting info with a progress bar in the lower-left corner. When it completes click the 'save all information' button and save it to a file then attach that file here.

Please attach your Documents/Paradox/EU4/settings.txt.
From your Documents/Paradox/EU4/logs/ folder, attach system.log , plus any other files in that folder over 0 bytes.

I see you have not updated Windows 10 for about a year, Are you having problems that prevent you from applying updates perhaps?

This thread has that same error but with AVG rather than your Avast, the fix seemed to be removing and reinstalling VC++ 2015. Which is a need for this game too!

As for the the other error, I uninstalled VC++ and reinstalled it, but no luck I'm afraid, still getting the same CTD. Thanks for the ideas though.

I had the exact same error for the past 2 days, but i think i found a solution. I uninstalled the game, deleted the eu4 folders on Steam/SteamApps/common/EU4 and Documents/Paradox/EU4 folders keeping the save files, re-installed the game and run a Steam Verify and it now works. Then I put back my save files folder on Documents/Paradox/EU4
and the error came out again, so i deleted once again the save folder and now the game works just fine. So I suggest you to copy your save folder somewhere and then delete it and try to run the game.

Thank you! This worked! Exactly as you say, the save games folder has to be deleted, then the game will launch. Weirdly, when I got into the game I loaded a random nation in an ironman, saved and quit, then I copied my old saves into the save games folder and the game still loads fine!

So there were some corrupted saves stopping the game from running, is that right? Or any old saves?

Its last major update was a year ago:

Operating System: Windows 10 Home 64-bit (10.0, Build 17763) (17763.rs5_release.180914-1434)

If the Updater app is not offering any new patch, well, something's wrong somewhere! There have been at least 2 major Win10 updates since then. But as this issue seems to have been resolved - somehow! - you may not wish to look into that, perfectly understandable.

I am having the same problem: launcher loads fine, game CTD while loading after about 5-10 seconds. Windows is up to date but I do not have KB4515384 installed. Deleted all save games, tried re-installing and then verifying the game on steam, tried running as administrator. Added the game to Windows Defender exclusions and I don't have any other anti-virus software. Nothing seems to help. CK2 and HOI4 are working fine.
