Interesting in that his wife gets the blame for nearly everything.

And yes, Baldr should be interesting, what with the being an imbecile and all.

It was a toss up; either have him act against his traits or blame the aggressive stuff I did do on someone else. I chose the latter. :)

Halfdan? More like Quarterdan, right?

Certainly a very interesting specimen, not what you would expect from a Viking ruler. Frankly, I'm surprised more of the Empire didn't peel off during his reign.

Qawurd made for an entertaining diversion. It's kind of Halfdan to befriend him, but possibly sticking him in Iceland was a bit cruel - at best you can say he can't freeze his nuts off anymore. :p

As far as Baldr goes... Well, perhaps what the Empire really needs right now is a gluttonous wroth sloth with a very natty villainous mustache. It's perfect for evil twirling! However, if a half-decent martial stat and an impressive 'tache is not enough, then I think the Empire is in for a turbulent time.

In all honesty, I wanted to get rid of more, but I couldn't shed the Netherlands (for example) without losing some pretty important stuff in the middle of England. Sneaky vassals.

The next reign will be very interesting, with Absolute authority and vassals that tend to be very unruly, especially if culture splits are happening. Would be surprised if you manage to hold on to that authority with an imbecile ruler.

We'll have to see how it turns out!

I apologize deeply for going so long without an update, or at least an inkling of when an update is coming. I'm going to work on screenshots tonight, but as to when I will update, you're most likely looking at this weekend.

Well
Chapter 6: A new way of ruling

7 December 906

As I take over the duties of my father, so I take over his task of chronicling our family. I suppose I should talk about myself at least, a little bit. Not that I love talking about myself or anything like that. Sure, I'm 28 and I've already had eleven autobiographies published. You might call that excessive, since there are, at last count, approximately fifteen people who can read. I would respond by saying that I'm the King so shut your face.

yuFNKu.jpg

My predecessors in this office have craved glory or land. I, on the other hand, want gold. Lots and lots and lots of gold. Land is good too, I guess, but only because it leads to more gold. By the time I die, I should have a giant statue made of me, composed entirely of melted gold. I am a humble man, so it will only be ten times life size. Any more than that, I feel, would be too ostentatious.

Here are the lands that I rule.

J7jish.jpg

My little ingrate of a brother, Oddr, had the gall to evict me from our family's palace in Jorvik. I am stuck with this tiny little hovel on the isle of Irland. That will not do! Where will I put all of my gold? Hmm... although I do love killing people and taking their gold, I wonder if I might talk them out of their gold. Then I can kill them without fear of getting their filthy blood on my precious gold! I should have a talk with my wife, Guthrun, I think.

lddqii.jpg

On second thought, maybe not. She prefers the shadows. Maybe it's because she's so horrifically old. 30?! She's practically my grandmother! Oh wait, can she read this journal? She knows how to use a battle axe. I'd better ask my new Chancellor, Toke of Hereford, instead.

aPhxIS.jpg

The one thing I don't like about being King is that I have to pay my advisors with some of my hard-looted gold. Basking in my presence is, apparently, not good enough of them. They're always whining about "food" and "shelter." My people are soft after all these years. Soft! We'll fix that soon enough.

QyqZPX.jpg

8 February 907, Evesham

I lead from the front, unlike my father, because that's how you get the best loot.

BIwxbb.jpg

I don't know who we're fighting, and I don't really care. Some Prince of Skotland against some other Prince of Skotland? Something like that. Oh, I've had to replace Toke. One of my more rebellious vassals had him arrested, if you can believe that. Then, the vassal had the gall to demand some of my gold to set him free! Not bloody likely. You wanted him so badly, you pay for him. In fact, I think Kraka of Mercia should pay me to let him go, since she's wasting my valuable time. That's time I could be spending earning gold!

31 March 907, Evesham

We are victorious in battle, as I expected. I didn't earn any loot, though, since all the rich guys ran away. All the peasants together had, like, 50 gold or something on them. They got their filthy peasant blood all over my gold, too. Doesn't anybody ever stop to think about the people they're hurting before they start a war? I strained my wrist polishing some of their disgusting coins!

4 August 907, Dyflinn

I hope this war against Skotland ends soon. We've won lots of victories (duh) but surprisingly little loot. I am beginning suspect killing poor people is not the way to accumulate wealth. I'll have to settle for killing them and taking their land. By the way, if you're reading this journal, you have to promise not to tell Oddr I'm having him killed. Sure, you may consider it "inhuman" to kill a 12 year old. Serves him right for being born and taking away Jorvik!

LCeaoH.jpg

24 August 907, Dyflinn

I think I've caught some sort of illness. All I know is that the other day, I saw a piece of gold in the middle of the street and I actually passed it up. That isn't like me at all.

22 December 907, Dyflinn

Still fighting these senseless wars. I keep getting called into them, making me waste precious raiders on fighting battles instead of killing and looting Christians. We're Vikings, that's kind of our thing. Still, I'm feeling better. I think I'll go visit the dungeons of this place to look for gold. Or silver. Silver is also good.

27 February 908, Dyflinn

I wish this castle would hurry up and fall already. I did find a new concubine in the dungeon; I was going to kill her, when she convinced me that if I let her live and took her as my woman, she would give me children who I could then hire out as mercenaries for money. I like the way she thinks.

24 May 908, Dyflinn

Apparently when I was home recuperating, I knocked up my wife. How do I know? Because she just gave birth to a son named Frirek. I caught him eyeing one of my gold pieces; I was going to have him killed for coveting my wealth, when Guthrun patiently explained he's attracted to anything shiny and does not lust for my piles and piles of future riches. He'd better not. I know he's an infant, but that doesn't mean he's safe if he wants my stuff.

12 January 909, outside Jorvik

Since some of our wars are over, I've been stalking Oddr outside Jorvik for the last several days. That little brat won't have that castle for much longer! Kraka of Mercia is on my enemy list too, now. She insists Oddr is the "true King" or something and is leading a rebellion against me.

BKYpdE.jpg

I would give Odin much if he would punch my father in the face a few times for having another son. A son who is damnably clever at evading my attempts to kill him. I'll have to crush this rebellion, arrest him, and execute him when trying to escape. Probably have to have the whole castle washed, though. I don't want traitor stink dirtying up my riches.

fx4YWS.jpg

16 April 909, Hlymrek

Armies fall before me like the destroyer I am! The more ferociously and eager I chase them down, the more stuff they drop as they run away screaming. Sometimes their valuables are, ah, spoiled. Doesn't mean it's not still good for melting down into a statue, though. I sent a letter to the King of Skotland, proposing he join us in battle. He'll get 100% of the glory, I get 100% of the gold. Once I have the gold, I'll take the glory too. I have the money; who's going to argue with me?

10 September 909, Connacht

Kraka has surrendered. She technically called it "a White Peace," but I still locked her up for treason.

Qd8bZO.jpg

It's not the most glorious way to end the war, I guess. I did strip her of the Jarldom of Mercia, which gives me another castle and thus more money and more soldiers with which to procure additional money.

18 November 909, Connacht

My little brother Dag died, leaving me Northumberland. I didn't even have to kill this one myself! Somebody called "pneumonia" did it. I wonder if I could hire them as an assassin to kill off Oddr?

1 January 910, Macclesfield

As a prank, I ordered my guards to arrest my half-brother Baldr and steal all of his riches. Would you believe he fought them off and has risen a rebellion against me?! Whoever heard of rebelling against a prank?

c3Qgts.jpg

8 September 910, Strangfjordr

Baldr sent me a letter, asking if I'd "just be cool" and let him alone. Apparently he doesn't know me very well, because his messengers objected vociferously when I had them arrested and stripped of all of their valuable, and sent back to him naked. Their clothes are probably worth something too. It isn't worth the risk of missing out, and if they die, it's no skin off my nose.

Unless there's a market for that...

11 December 910, Hlymrek

I am sieging Baldr's castle, and I just got news that my brother Oddr might be blown up with manure soon, in prison.

8 January 911, Hlymrek

The attack failed. As punishment for not dying, I took the Jarldom of Jorvik from Oddr. It did not include the castle, which is what I wanted, so now I'm even angrier at him.

10 February 911, Hlymrek

I've given Northumberland to Marshal Thorbjorn, as a reward for killing my enemies and leaving me the loot. Oh yeah, a few weeks I had my sister marry my Chancellor, Conchobar, matrilineally so that when they both die and also their kids, I'll end up inheriting any property they have. That's what sisters are for, right?

26 June 911, Ossory

Why won't Baldr just surrender? And why do people keep revealing my plot to kill Oddr? If my brother really loved me, he'd kill himself and save me the trouble of trying to kill him.

30 August 911, Teviotdale

My son, Sigfrid, just turned 16.

Z7jeUY.jpg

He's kind of boring. He likes talking with people and showing them how brave he is. I've tried to teach him that the only purpose of social interaction is to find how rich somebody is and, subsequently, how to make them poor, but in this I have failed. I even had to give him 8 gold pieces as a birthday present. He'd better start paying out or I'll find a son who will! Still, I do have a devious plan; Thordis, a two year old girl, is the Heir to East Anglia, which just so happens to be land I don't have yet. All I need is them to get married, have kids, and then kill all of them to get my hands on their sweet, sweet land and gold.

30 September 911, Roxburgh

IT'S ABOUT DAMNED TIME

6lIobb.jpg

Moments after he died, I ordered my Steward to start moving my stuff to Jorvik.

chTRur.jpg

I also found out that Oddr had somehow accumulated over 100 gold pieces while in prison. This is the best day ever!

30 January 912, Jorvik

Another son. Yay. Saemundr is what we're calling this one.

25 March 913, Tyrone

Baldr will not surrender. I hate him. I hate everyone. People keep dragging me into wars I don't want to fight and then don't give me money for them. Makes a guy a little bothered. A little irritated. Irritated enough to RIP OUT THEIR INTERNAL ORGANS AND STRANGLE THEM WITH THEIR INTESTINES!

iR96iU.jpg

Hey, they're dirty Catholic rebels, so Odin will probably give me a medal for doing that.

29 April 913, Oriel

Baldr is defeated and locked up. He's also one Thanedom lighter, as Chester is mine once more. I've decided to use some of my vast wealth to build a Temple to Odin.

Naturally, such an elaborate temple would require a substantial admission fee. Odin needs to wet his beak, if you know what I mean.

By Odin I mean me.

23 June 913, Lancaster

We're still fighting... somebody. Sometimes, disemboweling is its own reward. I've also found a new best friend!

XTy836.jpg

He's the best kind of friend, since he likes earning money as much as I do, but likes giving it to me even more. I gave him the Temple to Odin as a reward.

I've picked a new Spymaster, too, a former seer and concubine to my father.

WBeozT.jpg

She keeps talking weird, but she likes having people killed; an important bond. To make sure she doesn't like killing me, I've named her Drottseti. I don't know what it means, but it sounds important.

18 September 913, Jorvik

Do you realize that in all of these wars, I've gained almost no land? No conquests? No real looting?

CUrMvf.jpg

That's about to change.
Well this guy sounds like a charmer

Well

Well this guy sounds like a charmer

Isn't he though? :)

At this stage, everyone, I've got enough material for three rulers, but the challenge is that I've already accomplished every one of my goals by 1154 and I don't think anything exciting will happen in the next 300 years. Once we convert in EUIV, we can shift the stray provinces around using the console (or maybe I can do that now?) I suppose I could export early, I guess, but that leaves me with the uncomfortable need to paper over 300 years. I'm not sure I'm that good a writer. More conquest will just make EUIV less enjoyable. It doesn't help that I'm stuck on 2.0.4 for CKII either because of how old the game is.

I don't see an easy solution to this problem; I would welcome any suggestions to either make CKII interesting or to provide a plausible way to sort through 300 years of history.

Update will, in any case, probably be posted in the next few days; RL stuff is going to have me crazy busy until the second week of June, but I'll try to squeeze in an update when I can.

I suppose I could set some newer parameters for you to work with in the interim. Try to destroy as much of Christianity as you can without expanding your Empire's borders.

You could have them adopt a new calender system so the gap between 1154 and 1444 is really only a few years and not a few centuries. I mean what good Norse ruler would count the years starting from the birth of Christ. :p

So this is the first time I've been here since the Forum Update (13 was the last one I saw), but I thought about this yesterday, (but presumed you had stopped updating this, sorry) but it turns out all my watches got reset... so who knows what threads I was watching and have missed stuff in. Oh well.

Well... I enjoyed the updates I missed and am looking forward to more. (Re-Watching.)

I wouldn't know -- Holy War, land and release?

Sounds a bit too complicated for my tastes. I might just try to soldier on and see how everything turns out; if it's unbearably dull, we can go with the early export option.

Chapter 17: Love's curse

Have you ever met somebody and instantly knew they were the one for you? That no other creature on Odin's Earth could possibly satisfy your needs, physically, mentally, and emotionally? Has that same person, who you trusted with your life and your heart, betrayed you? Even as my hours wane, I fear no Hel -- I have already been there. [1] Nothing any of the gods, even Loki, could conjure would sting half as much as my betrayal. My sister never warned me of the truly awful consequences of being a ruler.

I am, I freely admit, not like any other Norseman. I abhor violence. The sight of any human being's blood, even my own, causes tremendous revulsion, and I can pass out for hours at a time. My vassals, my friends, even my own child considered this a horrendous weakness. They call me "coward". Is it not better that I remain behind and not doom our brave warriors by seeing their commander collapse? I personally detest and despite war and all of its adjuncts, and I tried, throughout my reign, to convince my subjects to uphold these beliefs. This went about as well as you might imagine. I was completely shocked when I heard from one of my warriors that other cultures and peoples feared me, called me a "Viking", and even postulated that I ate babies.

iiyvb8.jpg

My wife, Swanhildis, had apparently put on my armor and charged into battle herself. At first, I didn't mind. We had often joked that the world would have been a much kinder place if she were the Emperor and I were the wife. I told my niece, Rikissa of Wales (Ofeig's daughter), that if it made her happy, I would let her travel and do whatever she liked. I loved her and she loved me, and we loved our daughter, Alfrid. Rikissa was to be my heir; although I personally wanted to see my sweet daughter take over for me, I bowed to the will of the Moot. However, my wife's jaunts abroad led to trouble with Alfrid's betrothed, a steadfast lad named Kongar. Apparently, Swanhildis had killed one of his men for misbehaving with a camp girl. He insisted on fighting me in Holmgang; how could I refuse?

Xip9SX.jpg

I think that first wound is what will eventually kill me. The ease with which Kongar had disposed of me deeply troubled my people, and soon I got word that there were plots against my life.

eHxdgP.jpg

Two months later came even worse news; the followers of the White Christ were demanding their lands returned to them in Aquitaine.

7Am9WC.jpg

Dear Swanhildis insisted that we raise a contingent, burn their capital to the ground, and stake their Warrior-Priest's head to a convenient spear. I, mortified, absolutely refused. If the people living in Aquitaine did not want to be Norse, why should we force them? I graciously contacted the Warrior-Priest and offered his people their lands.

Fjwb2s.jpg

I freed other followers of the White Christ too.

CuvkBq.jpg

My wife, around this time (spring of 1068, I believe), began to look at me strangely. Can you imagine that she thought I was falling under the influence of the White Christ? I am Fylkir! I would no sooner follow the White Christ than I would try to pet Fenrir. She demanded a sign that I was a strong Emperor and Fylkir, and so I ordained the creation of a new Kingdom, the Kingdom of Norway, a title I held myself.

VhRM0M.jpg

I further swore that I would pursue the lands of Norway with all the vigor I could muster. I put the matter in her hands, trusting her to show the natives of Norway the power of the gods and to convince them to join us, peacefully, without shedding the blood of our brothers. Sweet Swanhildis, of course, knew only one path to success, and she laid siege to a number of castles. Of course, those few enlightened subjects who had accepted my way of life were outraged. I began to grow suspicious of my loving wife's pernicious influence. Can you imagine she had a dung gatherer imprisoned, without my knowledge, for years?

fxdTqz.jpg

People laughed at me behind my back, said that my wife was the true Emperor, and many a formerly loyal vassal lead uprisings against me.

HKCgj2.jpg

Worse still was their hateful nickname for me.

pbsg0J.jpg

Do you know, I offered to grant those people autonomy, and they refused. It was up to my Marshal and Swanhildis to maintain power. I sank deeper into depression, refused to leave Jorvik, refused to leave my rooms, even. My daughter's 16th birthday was a rare bright spot. I even shook hands with Kongar and formally asked the moot to recognize her as my successor.

BvcsCJ.jpg

With Alfrid confirmed as my successor, I started to leave the castle. I began preaching the glory of our Britannish civilization. The Thane of Bergenshus openly begged our protection without a single drop of blood. I paid off another nobleman with riches, taking his crown, and further consolidated our control of Norway. That was about the time I learned of Kongar's treachery. He had betrayed my daughter's heart, cheating with another woman. I was so enraged I ordered him arrested and banished him from the Empire. Let him live... Outside, with the barbarians.

otJZII.jpg

I had no way of knowing how close Alfrid was to her husband; they had only recently become married. She died of a broken heart a few months after his banishment. It was at this stage that Swanhildis drifted apart. Her opinion had been to behead the poor oaf and find a more suitable replacement for Alfrid. Yet, I stood my ground, that the spilling of the blood of the Norse was morally wrong. I fear now, in my darkest of hours, that she may have been right, but what could I do? The Moot refused to recognize my niece Rikissa as heir; they had loved Alfrid as we had, and many were questioning whether or not we Hvitserks deserved to rule. They elected Jarl Strykar of Dyrflinn. I cannot imagine why; he was a complete buffoon and had no children. Still, the people wanted him, and I was inclined to grant their request, but he tragically died of a snakebite.

eEC9Df.jpg

lueAJj.jpg

The most ugly rumors drifted back to me: Strykar had died not of a simple snakebite. I had, apparently, hired a snake handler to release the reptile into Strykar's home. You probably think me foolish at this point; you may even have already guessed the actual perpetrator. But, the gods damn it all, Swanhildis was my wife, my one true love! I had to use the most extreme method at my disposal.

I divorced her. I wept for ten days, but I divorced her.

6K1GTR.jpg

I dove into my work. I poured money into refurbishing my castle. I built new cities and castles all over our Empire. I met an intriguing fellow named Qawurd, who was a desert Arab but a good godsfearing Norseman at heart.

uHnXBq.jpg

I don't know why we became such good friends. Maybe it was the often unfortunate pronunciation of his name. Maybe it was because he swore undying fealty to me. Maybe some deep-seated portion of my Norse soul was impressed with his prowess as a warrior. Regardless, I named him Court Eunuch. My new wife, Svanhild, also received an important place as my Court Seer. It was she who took over my first Blot as ruler. I begged with her to spare the Norse and, for a wonder, she did as I asked. Those who followed the White Christ were offered a chance to convert to save their lives, but refused. I did admire that courage. I, of course, waited until the sacrifice was over before joining my friends and family with mead and meat. It was at the Blot that I first broached the subject of absolute authority with my vassals. The only way to ensure that blood was not needlessly spilled was to deny my men the right to wage war except under my banners. It was an unpopular move, but it was necessary.

In February 1073, my greatest shame was uncovered. I had been... carrying on with my ex-wife. I tearfully begged forgiveness from Svanhild. I even tried a joke about how similar their names were; this proved ill-advised. It was at this point that I went catatonic from the pressures of my position. Svanhild was horrified by this condition and immediately reconciled with me after extracting a solemn oath never to see Swanhildis again.

BLAXMZ.jpg

f0hiyX.jpg

Swanhildis cursed my name to anyone who would listen, and particularly damned my "foreign harlot" (Svanhild is Swedish, as you know) for "perverting her once loving husband." Enough people blamed me that I gained a nasty reputation.

6oEdmz.jpg

However, more of my vassals considered my position an impossible one and praised me for my decision. They granted me unlimited authority, which I used to enact my greatest achievement: I liberated Svithjod, who while our cousins were not our brothers, and placed them in the capable hands of my cousin Sigbjörn. I also gave Qawurd a city and estates in Iceland in gratitude for his faithful service.

ho6q7a.jpg

MJD8OE.jpg

I was still not entirely at ease. I became obsessed with seeing a scion of my house confirmed, once and for all, in a Moot. Rikissa's support continued to wane, as she grew bitter and cynical as a result of her age and unpopularity. Instead, our people preferred Baldr, the King of Wales. Baldr was Rikissa's niece and Ofeig's grandson; Ofeig, as you no doubt recall, was Fylkir Halfdan I's eldest son. The blood of Emperors flowed in his veins. I personally have nothing against Baldr, although he is not the most pleasant person. He is lazy, gluttonous, and ill-tempered. He's a bit dumb too. He relishes violence, but draws back from personal confrontations if he is in any way threatened. Yet because he spreads around plunder, bears the scars of battle, and his wife is popular, he is the man chosen by the Moot. I think he will be bad for the Empire, but at least he has many children, so our line is under no threat.

5kAsA8.jpg

I lay down tonight an uneasy man, just as my sister did before the pox took her. I will not see tomorrow's sun. Perhaps my fears of Baldr's incompetence are unfounded. Perhaps brutish louts are actually what the people want. I do not think this is likely, but I have been wrong before. I should like to see Swanhildis one last time before I die. I do not think this is likely either. At least the Empire will go on.

[1] I recognize that Norse Hel is not the same as Hell in the western sense; trouble is, there's no real equivalent to our Hell that I'm aware of in Norse mythology. You'll have to accept my poetic (prosaic?) license. :)

Next update will come next week, so keep your eyes open! I think Baldr's reign will surprise, if not delight, many of you.
What a sad life :(

Bit of a dilemma you have there. You could have a last orgy of violence, conquer as much as you can (say, in 25 or 50 years), and then convert to EU IV, with liberal shedding of possessions during the conversion. Then just blame the intervening 250 years on a new Dark Ages after the overextended Viking Empire collapsed.

Anyway, leave it up to you, but I'd say definitely port it over as soon as your enjoyment in CK runs out.

I'm sure this won't be popular but you could, hypothetically, enable Sunset Invasion for a late game challenge that won't significantly expand your borders and will further increase the challenge in EU IV.

It was, wasn't it?

We'll have to see how it goes.

I'm sure this won't be popular but you could, hypothetically, enable Sunset Invasion for a late game challenge that won't significantly expand your borders and will further increase the challenge in EU IV.

I don't currently have Sunset Invasion, and I'm not sure I could even enable the DLC if I wanted to since I'm using an older version of the game. But maybe I could? It's an idea, anyway.

I'm going to try (fingers crossed) to update sometime this weekend. I won't swear to it, but if I finish this dissertation chapter in the next couple of days, I can afford to take enough time off to write the update.

Chapter 18: The diary of a dealer in death
As dictated to Qawurd, Court Eunuch and trusted friend

I am the greatest warrior the world has ever known. I have killed everyone worth killing. I am undefeated in battle. There is nobody who has escaped Skullsplitter. The gods fear me, for they know I will kill everyone in Valhalla. I will kill death. I will kill life. I will kill the earth. I will kill killing. I will kill everyone who has already been killed again. I will kill those who are yet to be born. I will kill the following people, ranked in order of the amount they need killing.

(The list goes on for two hundred pages.)

As dictated to written by Qawurd, Court Eunuch and trusted friend

Other men have written for Emperors. Sometimes they have had the luxury of admiring, loving, or even tolerating the people they write about it. It is my honor to give to you the history of, perhaps, the least likable man in the history of the Empire of Britannia. The fact he considers me a friend -- I, who served his father faithfully -- disgusts me. He is not half the warrior I am, yet I do not brag. My performance on the battlefield speaks for itself. However, I have tremendous respect for history. To spend my time cataloging his crimes would be almost as long as his list of "people to be killed." It would also not be fair. Whether or not I liked him (I didn't), he is nonetheless one of the greatest monarchs we have had, and it is my duty to share what he did and how he did it with posterity.

For the first three weeks of his reign, Baldr, First of his Name, Emperor of Britannia, actually followed his aunt's lead. Rikissa the Wise, was Baldr's grandfather's younger sister. He pursued a firm but fair course, using persuasion to convince weaker nations to join the Empire in exchange for protection. By 21 August 1078, that had changed, and not for the better.

mta7P4.jpg

It was during a report I delivered to Baldr as his aide (by virtue of my literacy) that he first learned of his allegedly mortal nemesis, the god Loki in human firm, King Ale of England. Ale had his faults, but most of them involved being popular, where Baldr never was. The Emperor, no matter his intellectual faults, was not stupid, and indeed very cunning. He projected an aura of contentment to all around him and even made Ale, a superb money manager, his Steward.

ek37AW.jpg

GZPw8B.jpg

By April of 1080, Ale had used a combination of his popularity, his glorious golden beard, and his fairness in dealing with peasants to secure a majority vote in the latest Moot to select Baldr's successor.

nYbbCA.jpg

7hp8Ra.jpg

Within in a matter of weeks, Baldr began plotting to kill Ale. In the many, many attempts on his life, Ale never once suspected who was trying to have him killed. He assumed he was simply clumsy but extraordinarily lucky at the same time. Baldr, of course, never let Ale know of his plans. I served as the Emperor's personal agent in many of these dealings, a job I would have preferred not to hold, but my loyalty to his family overwhelmed any sense of rectitude I had. Baldr, in keeping with the image of the Fylkir, renounced his former gluttonous ways and became a model citizen to all outward appearances. He even saved a man's life!

UKDQDh.jpg

8ikMXS.jpg

If it were not for Torstein of Fareyar's rebellion in November 1080, Ale would have been dead. However, Ale's financial talents and unwavering support for his Emperor made him a valuable asset, one that Baldr intended to exploit.

nbhrj3.jpg

gZx8aY.jpg

His revolt, which spanned most of the Empire, provided the Emperor a chance to make use of his justifiably legendary temper. He personally slaughtered every sympathizer he could find in Jorvik or wherever he traveled. Baldr was less likely to lead an army than he was to lead a mob. His fighting skills were purely of the tavern-fight variety, and he recognized that. He always appointed skilled leaders to fight in wars, and this war was no exception. I had the privilege of leading the punitive army's right wing in Norway. Torolf commanded the army overall, with Jedvard to my right.

A few months into the war, Prince Dyre came of age. Dyre was as good as man as his father was wrathful and cruel, yet he truly excelled in the art of deception. His natural love of gossip and speaking made him a superb gathered of information. He was even-handed and patient, always willing to speak to subordinates and help them with their problems. His wife, Astrid of Cassel, was a natural orator and complimented his abilities very well.

dhT2Sa.jpg

It was around this time that a nobleman got word of the Emperor's plot to kill Ale. I paid him off, at the Emperor's request, but the defeat at Crossraguel distracted most of our Empire from what was going on.

kzxUNi.jpg

8EhHNu.jpg

By early 1082, Ale had again reached the highest levels of the Moot. The nobleman had stayed quiet, but even the hint of an attempt on his life had driven his popularity to new heights, and the Emperor finally ordered the contract on his life cancelled.

iK0oHU.jpg

d2cmPF.jpg

A number of victories pushed us closer to victory, but it was the discovery of the weakness of Torstein's island fortress that ultimately ended the rebellion. Burning a heretic at the stake to "improve morale", in his words, Baldr ordered an expedition to those islands; very rapidly, Baldr brought Torstein to heel, promising him that he would face no time in the dungeons if he surrendered.

NxuLvO.jpg

MJQMDs.jpg

zW8CDZ.jpg

Of course, Baldr lied. As soon as the war ended, he had both Torstein and his accomplice Rikissa of Norway arrested. They evaded capture, but they lacked the same ability separately as they did together, and they were ruthlessly hunted down and imprisoned one by one.

gJ6jfl.jpg

King Ale's wife, who was brighter than he was, discovered who had plotted to kill her husband; she too, entered the Fylkir's dungeons.

LOtkwW.jpg

To further cement Ale's humiliation, Baldr took his wife as a concubine, then renewed the contract on Ale's life.

95t8di.jpg

0GaVzP.jpg

A Great Blot and plenty of sacrifices satiated the people, while Baldr handed out the titles of Rikissa and Torstein like mead. Ale's death was barely even noticed.

eysPnNsuj

Shortly after Ale's death, I was appointed Steward of Castle Jorvik. I welcomed the opportunity to serve, of course. Dyre, now once again Heir to the Empire, was given the Kingdom of Wales as a test to see how good a ruler he would make; he also received the Kingdom of Frisia. In summer 1093, Baldr had his second son, Halfdan. Ale's son, Hemming, met his father's fate the moment he became too popular, although he was pushed off a building. By the time 1100 began, everybody across the world recognized the ferocity and cruelty of Baldr.

8OxUWU.jpg

3gmADf.jpg

On 23 May 1100, Baldr consolidated the Hvitserk reign for all eternity. While it is true that Baldr did add a few provinces here and there to the Empire, it was this achievement that earned him the appellation he bore upon his death. Baldr dissolved the Moot, once and for all. Never again would the Emperor be selected by anybody but the gods. Those few who dared object were very quickly shown Skullsplitter, an excellent resolution to any argument.

vDkdlg.jpg

However, Dyre, the new heir to the throne, was not the man he used to be. Instead of inspiring his father to be a better man, he took on his father's cowardice and arbitrary nature.

4ZrqAd.jpg

1101, the next year, became known as the Year of the Three Emperors, as we all know. First, Baldr died on 17 March 1101.

A9Bihg.jpg

Dyre joined his father in Valhalla four months later.

I1kHlh.jpg

Sigbjorn, when he took the throne, was three years old. I often wonder, as I enter my final years, if Dyre had survived, what sort of Emperor he would have been. Baldr's brutality, killing people for no reason, was truly terrifying, but at least he killed his enemies (or friends, or total strangers) with his bare hands (or Skullsplitter). Dyre's love of the shadows might have led him down a dark path. I cannot say. I am glad that Baldr is dead; I think a great many people will live longer lives as a result. I am not glad that Dyre is dead, but I am relieved. Sigbjorn will grow up without his grandfather or father's pernicious influence, and that is something. It isn't much, but it is something.
=============================================================================
Sigbjorn might take two updates -- we'll see -- but I hope to start updating more frequently now that a troublesome chapter of the dissertation is finished. Maybe I'll get up to a whole update each month!

It would have been funnier if Ale was killed with poisoned ale. :p

I'm also disappointed that Halfdan didn't become emperor. At least starting with Sigbjorn as a child gives you an opportunity to name all his future children Halfdan. :D

Looks like you have a few titles to reclaim to occupy your time at least.

good that you changed sucession in time, elective is good in the short term, but when you have a large realm, its difficult to elect your preferred hier, since other people of diffirent cultures throwing their hat in the ring. I spent most of my Pendragon game outright bribing the biggist electors into supporting my hiers. :)

Not the nicest emperor, although everything is relative with Vikings, the Medieval Ages in general and raids. :p Will be interesting to see how Sigbjorn grows up, how the regency will work out and how the realm is held together during the following years (max authority is explosive during regencies, and for a child it is hard to imprison vassals or murder people like Baldr did).

For a blood-thirsty, grudge-carrying maniac (that opening parapgraph suggests Baldr needed mental help urgently. And/or a padded cell with a straitjacket)... For all those character faults, Baldr was surprisingly effective. Okay, so it took a while to take out Ale, but the revolt was crushed and primogeniture was instituted. That by itself would make for a highly successful reign.

Bad luck with Dyre. Good luck with the long regency.
