I am experiencing a perplexing event, provinces I conquered, some times generations ago, are getting their independence without rebelling. In my current Byzantine game I am the Holy Roman Emperor, as I said areas I've integrated into the Empire(s) and have cores in are somehow gaining instant independence. I've only seen it happen once but I couldn't read the message that came up because the game speed was on it's fastest and I closed the messaged accidentally while trying to command a navy.

Are they at war with you or at peace when this happens? Do you have an older save you can try again? Perhaps it's related to the release of unlawful territory for one-province nations, possibly a glitch. I'm not sure what the default option for that event is if you choose nothing (keep or release).

That's the odd thing I was at peace with the new nations, my garrison assigned to the province were still there that's how I know it wasn't a rebellion I hadn't noticed. I loaded an earlier save and it didn't happen again.

I think that's a bug where when other nations collapses or yields to the rebel's demands, it leads to the creation of a new nation that also included the lands of other nations.

I'm not sure of the exact conditions that this occurs, but it may be that nationalist rebels spawned on the nations you were at war with. Even after you conquered the desired territories, the rebels still remained. After a few generations, the rebels managed to bankrupt or the AI decide to give in to rebel's demands, and this led to the creation a new nation, carved out of the lands that also belonged to the conqueror.

ive seen rebels gain independence in the americas, where they took provinces from me as well, even though i wasnt involved in the rebellion.....

This is really annoying, especially when you have no rebels, nor revolt risk anywhere in your country. Their capital comes from your territory, so the only way you can get your real estate back is to annex them....with a resultant spike in BB. I've mentioned this in the fora a few times, but paradox has no interest in fixing it.
