Just look at the adventures of Magellan, Cortez and Pizzarro. Absolutely bonkers! Mutanies, plague, bad portents, getting lost, skirmishes with natives, dynamic ally with small tribes events....

Building Expeditions/ Fleets. You could go furter and even "build" the composition of conquistador expeditions and explorer fleets. Have slots for lieutenants... do I take a learned Franciscan linguist, a Quatermaster, an engineer, a cartographer, a skilled hunter? Do I take a better ships cook for morale, a family of cats to hunt rats and reduce instances of plague aboard ship, a priest to reduce instances of mutiny a skilled carpenter to reduce hull damage over time or a rigger to increase speed.....

You could have different setups for Western/ Orthodox (pushing into Siberia etc) / Muslim (into the East).

Native Alliances. You could even have conquistadors gaining "attached" native armies from allied tribes aiding them in conquering local superpowers.... see Cortez for more inspiration on this. Rather than you nation being allied they would be more like temporary event fired mercs that attach themselves to your army....

Picking the cats for the exploration expeditions? Really? That's not my definition of "Grand strategy" ;)

I know! But it was these tiny expeditions made up of a handful of men (and cats) that changed the course of history on a grand scale.

A DLC about one of the main features of the game...?

Won't happen right? lol.

Didn't really happen in EUIII though. As far as I can tell the system has pretty much been left untouched and is almost a complete port over.

If we get a variation on the "Adventurer" Army. An event pops up and you can support an Adventurer with money, ships, men or not at all. If you have the "right" Technology or are a Historical Colonizer. A unit Shows up on map in a Colony and tries invading an "Native" country nearby.(within naval supply range)

This would simulate Cortez and Pizarro quite well.

I just wish for more consistency with natives. Some you can conquer by simply spamming out a colonist but others for some reason require a causus beli. It is especially awful in West Africa, why are some playable but the rest are just empty spaces? It doesn't need to be 100% accurate, as West Africa lacks many historical resources. But putting only the ones with evidence of looks wrong and empty, small tribal groups in the area would make more sense than un-colonizable land.

Attacking natives (non-countries) takes Mil Mon points (5/attack) as well as an Army in province. The colonist will spam out the natives once a colony becomes a City. just like in EU3 all natives in province become citizens and help make colony more productive and higher tax base.

Now We won't see players genocidally eliminating Natives just to make sure they don't destroy a colony. More likely player will garrison those colonies with small armies and just wait for colony to become city.

Now If AI would do the same.........not just create "doomsacks" of its whole army and Navy.

Actually be nice if we can finance these explorers as Monarchs did and that these explorers are AI controlled.

So instead of random "oh we've learnt about so and so province" we now get a lot more flavour about -why- we've learnt about so and so province, what happened upon learning about this province and so forth.

I think it is better than me personally moving an adventurer army across Africa. Sure, maybe I might be needed to send in an army later but those brave explorers, scientists out on their expeditions! And event system, naturally, is perfect for that. I also think it will then make interactions with natives a lot more intricate than just them randomly rising up or me wiping them out with my army.

That's my thoughts.

That's my thoughts.

One of the games I've done a design doc on has the concept of 'total fog of war'. You can send out expeditions, but they're all AI controlled and you don't know what they're doing until they get back. You'll have a general idea of what they're doing based on their reports and what they're supposed to be doing, but if you lose them into a black hole you'll never know. By physically moving the player's base, you can move where the fog of war is lifted, but you're not supposed to be doing that willy-nilly on the strategic layer.

In the end, the concept sounds neat but not fun for most people.

Hello,

I quite like your ideas. I agree that the game really needs to improve colonization, in the current state it's probably one of the "worst" aspects of the game. To the dynamic chain of events, I would add the importance of diplomatic treaties with natives in exchange for trade, with the optional event that puts you to war with them. I would personally greatly enjoy helping out a local nation developing over the centuries into a near western tech level vassal.
