I need a refresher: is it possible to conquer a province next to an un-cored province that I might have taken shortly before? I'm looking to see if I can conquer Oberkärnten (a core of releasable nation Styria) after taking Friuli? Or is that not possible until Friuli is cored? See image below for context (Oberkärnten and Friuli share a small border, fyi).

yes you can

but you can't core province 2 before coring province 1

Well the plan is to release Styria from province 2 as mentioned, so no need to core. I don't really want Friuli anyway, but it's what I have to do in order to be able to declare a reconquest war later for all of Styria's cores before three of them (the three southernmost Austrian provinces) expire by November 11, 1494.

Just make sure that Friuli is within coring range before declaring the wars. Simply go to the colonial mapmode and hover over the province and you'll see the distance to it, as well as your coring/colonial range. Italy stretches quite a bit south and it'd be an embarassing mistake to do.

It's firmly within colonial range, I have Dip Tech 7 and the closest province I have to Friuli sea-ward is Sassari on Sardinia.
