I think you need to have a Maintenance Company attached to the unit in combat for there to be a >0% chance of capturing equipment. You get something like 5% per Maintenance Company level you've researched. (On my work computer - HOI4 not installed - so can't verify that number.)

They should bump that up. I don't feel like its fair to make it require a maintenance company to capture equipment, when it's as simple as any random soldier picking the gun up off the ground, and dusting it off.

I suppose the idea is there is a higher "cost" of assimilating, deploying and using captured equipment. Picking up a rifle is one thing and I absolutely agree. But taking a towed gun, truck or tank and keeping it going for more than a couple days is more involved. There needs to be some overhead to simulate that. Personally, I'm ok with the system as it's working now.

My problem is it was never clearly communicated that a maintenance company was necessary for it to happen. I'd only been putting them on my tanks, because that's what made sense to me.
Their icon is a big wrench, so they get to work on things that need big wrenches.
I guess I'll have to put them on my mot infantry, too, now.

Their icon is a big wrench, so they get to work on things that need big wrenches.

Maybe the icon is supposed to represent a wrench set. :)

And yes, it wasn't very clear that this was a requirement ... I remember reading it as "it will improve your chance."

How do I conquer equipment? There comes an extra picture/info... right?

This phrase "There comes an extra picture/info... right?" might mean the following:

"When a player captures enemy equipment, the game should provide feedback to the player using a picture, icon, color, flash, or maybe even a special sound. The game should signal to the player that the player's army has captured enemy equipment."

I agree 100%

More feedback to the customer.

For me personally, I don't want a pop up after every battle telling me I've captured equipment. There should be some place in one of the ledgers to look up data like this (and there may already be - I just don't know where it is).

There is, under the battle log where it tells you how much equipment you've destroyed, if you mouse over it there's a tooltip that says how much you've captured (in my case almost none because I usually use infantry to close pockets)

I don't want a pop up after every battle telling me I've captured equipment.

I agree.

But there are other ways to transmit information other than a pop-up.

Envision the future:
  • The game gives information to the player in a non-cluttering way.
  • Note the verb, "gives". Imagine a game where a player doesn't have to go shuffling through ledgers and reports (although those are nice and have a place).
The game already incorporates features that provide information to the player. These include
  • location of ports and airfields
  • indications of past movement and direction of friendly and enemy units when viewing a new portion of the map
  • audio cues indicating significant events such as naval invasions
  • out-of-supply death skulls
  • airplanes shot down
  • location of naval battles
Something similar could be done for informing the player that the player has captured equipment.

But no pop-ups.

(granted, the information about capturing equipment might not be important...meaning, the player might not make any decisions based on the information. If the information is "non-actionable", then it would make sense not to bombard the player with too much information. But there are some circumstances where a player would wish to know the rate and amount of enemy equipment captured. For example, playing as India or China, the player might purposely make underequipped units. Capturing enemy equipment could be a key strategy for fielding a competent army. Knowing the amount and rate of enemy equipment capture would advise the Chinese or Raj player on how to array the player's military factories)

You need a maintenance company on your divisions you want to capture equipment

This is good to know.

I had thought that there was a base chance to capture equipment (without maintenance companies) and that maintenance companies increased the plunder.

But that has been clarified, "You need a maintenance company on your divisions you want to capture equipment."

You can see the capture rate in the division stats. The only things I know that effect capture rate is maintaince Company and scavenger trait.

Basically maintaince Company have become like field hospital for Equipment.

BTW, I think HOI IV player quartermasters must drink themselves in stupor. As France, in mid 1942, here is the equipement of one line division on the Maginot line (IE, was in mobile action for like two months in a limited offensive to clear the Rhine left bank.

(16 INF, 4 ART, 2 HTD, Hospital, Engineers, Recon, Maintenance, Support Art.

-90 French guns level II
-64 German guns level II
-2 Hungarian guns level II

Half of the weapons are German and Italian, thanks to constant attacks, plus an inkling of weapons from 11 others countries, including Belgian riles, Polish rifles, Czech ones and what could count as a collector edition, Luxemburgers and Danish ones ! The 20 trucks are from seven countries and apparently I'm repurposing radio sets and shovels from Japan to Venezuela. (I'm aghast at the road that one rifle unit made from Shanxi to the Maginot line...)

(And that's a division that saw little to none action. The divisions on the Low Countries borders, the Alps or the mobiles ones have Soviet guns captured by the Spanish Nationalists and then captured, Japanese guns, Chinese guns. The record are the divisions that saw the most heavy fighting north of the Maginot line : the ones with elite status have none French equipment besides their Heavy Tank Destroyers.)

In a sad testament to the AI or cosplaying of reality, the LARM divisions who fight everywhere have 17 types of German light tanks.
