Romans...

I still persist that the Roman empire is the greatest empire through history.

To conquer the Americas largest kingdoms was not a big deal when America was found. Djingis did never even try to make his large conquered landmass a empire.

The impressive parts of the Roman empire was the fact that there was a political system used, strong economy, a convertible currency and a common language (even though forced upon most).
The fall of Rom was due to problems in the generation shifts. If the Republic idea would have prevailed, I am pretty sure that the world would look different from today......

All large empires are not built on the origin people alone. The Roman mercenary system contained soldiers from all corners of the empire....

Just to make an end note, I also believe that it was best for humanity that the Roman empire did fall, since it's pure existence would have slowed down the European development, and with the the development of the world.......

Just my opinions, so no need to get all anti-Italian...

:D

I know there are many good reasons for not being able to conquer the world but it should none the less be possible, allthough only remotely so. The holding on the your possessions should be the next to impossible part. My idea is that subjugating people should be easier as long as you are winning. I don´t have any hard facts but I´m guessing that populations in EU-times were alot more prone to rebel when their conqueror was looking weaker.

I seriously doubt that Napoleons mainland vassals would have turned on him if he had conquered Russia (or did they turn on him?).

Winning battles and conquering more land should reduce nationalism revolts but should have only marginal effect in your home provinces.

A system along these lines would make it more possible to conquer the world as long as you keep going and bringing more news about how unbeatable your army is. As soon as you get bogged down or your core provinces are too exhausted to keep fighting your empire is in serious trouble.

Actually, if nationalism or culture markers are possible for armies you should have a snowball-in-hell-chance of making it if you can send troops from different parts of your empires to quell revolts far from home but the long-term survival prospects of the empire should be zero. So when you have conquered the whole world and run out of opponents your empire is toast.

On another note it should be possible to raise troops from newly conquered territories but they shold carry a serious risk of mutiny when the going gets bad and be very dagerous to keep as a garrison in their home.
