The Byzantine empire has declared a war on one of my vassal kings to replace him with an alternate claimant. If he wins, the kingdom will revert to him (the claimant is in the Byzantine emperors dynasty). Despite that, I'm not allowed to enter the war to defend him, because "you can't enter your vassals wars". However, and this seems really strange, I *can* join the Byzantine emperor's war against my own vassal.

I eventually figured out that the emperor began the war back when he was in my empire as a vassal to that king; while that war dragged on, he successfully claimed the Byzantine throne, and then continued his war against my vassal with his new power.

Other than assassinating the claimant to put and end to this, is there anything I can do? It seems odd that I can't defend my own vassal from a foreign power.

My first thought was that they'd gotten sucked in to someone else's war (which would still be weird, but less weird). But it's definitely listed as "Basileus Niphon's war on...". And looking back at saved games, it was definitely started by Niphon back when he was Duke of Syria; at the time it was a totally valid war---he was a vassal of the relevant king. It just got weird when he became Basileus. (There is an allied duke who's still inside my empire, though.)

If you've got high crown authority you have nothing to worry about, titles cant leave your realm, if not, then you can just find any CB and declare war on ERE crush their army and timer will tick for your vassal.
