The opinion nerfs that accompanied Conclave are too harsh for the base game. I don't understand why they balanced the game around a DLC, it should've been the other way around.

So before buying it did a quick check on the Conclave features, and looks like the only cool feature is being able to create your own mercenary band. For example, I don't see any benefit of the new education system or the council. Am I missing anything?

All of the DLCs are necessary to fully enjoy the game.

I actually really like the council mechanics of conclave, although I don't like that you give up the "kings full peace" mechanic of absolute crown authority. However, the council does significantly change the internal politics of a realm, so if you mostly want to rule with an iron fist it's a bit harder at the beginning, although with an abolished council you can still do pretty much whatever you want.

Forget about Conclave. Everything in it was a mistake. Reaper's Due is great though.

The new education system utterly shits on the pre-Conclave on. You can also create your own mercenary band. Regencies are also more improved. They also introduced favors, which allows for more interesting ways to achieve your aims. Obligation laws are also better.

So no, not everything in it was a mistake.

Conclave actually made ck2 fun again for me. I've tried to play it, but I've never been as into the game as I was launch to rome DLC until I played conclave. I'm not a big fan of the threat system, but I really like the RP options conclave opinions up, it made internal politics fun again. There's also lots of cool events for playing a child ruler... which I end up doing a lot. Conclave doesn't make the game easier... but it does make it more interesting and fun.

I'm having more fun with Reaper's Due as it has come out than I did Conclave. The powerful vassal thing I associate with Conclave is annoying though. Yes, you have less than a quarter of my levies... Definitely powerful.

That depends on what you want, Conclave changes part of the game more integral to the gameplay and makes it somewhat harder to internally manage your realm, if you dig that stuff and always felt like handling vassals was too easy, then conclave all the way.
Reaper's due on the other hand adds rather than changes, most of your game would remain the same but you would get the addition of much deeper disease mechanics and generally get more stuff to do/have done to you in death related business.

So, it depends if you want your gameplay to change, conclave changes around all the way you want to go about the council and your vassals(or liege), with Reaper's due your gameplay will mostly stay the same, it's mostly fun events.
