If you're strapped for cash and only need a few hundred men to turn the tide, small cheap mercenary bands are pretty useful. It might not make a big difference if you're the Abbasid Empire fighting the Byzantines, but what if you're a count trying to annex your neighbour's county?

@Groogy is there no law relating to whether councilors can be freely appointed and replaced, or retain their position for life?

It worked great on the other side because the AI seemed to have no problems wasting their money on them.

Respectfully disagree !

Before I hire any mercenary group I always check the stats of the leader. In many cases they are kind, craven drunkards with 7 Martial skill but with an elite band of killer HI that I need to take out the enemy force. In that case I will hire the band, but also trawl through the tiny nomad bands for that brave 21 Martial Trickster Terrain Expert with the 7 LC companions and put him in charge of the unified group.

Best damned 5 gold I ever spend !

EDIT - Kick ass update - you guys rock !

Btw, I noticed that in the screen for the inheritance law that as Duke of Breizh you couldn't pick tanistry.

Have Breton's been moved out of the Celtic culture group or something?

They still have the Celtic portrait pack, so I doubt it.

More likely it's a reflection of the fact that Brythonic cultures didn't have tanistry.

Maximum number of merc bands that can be maintained?

You can only have a single band under your control.

Can u post more than 1 commander to the same merc band and control its composition?

No. You appoint the leader of the band itself. He will then get some courtiers to use as commanders and appoint them himself.

If you're strapped for cash and only need a few hundred men to turn the tide, small cheap mercenary bands are pretty useful. It might not make a big difference if you're the Abbasid Empire fighting the Byzantines, but what if you're a count trying to annex your neighbour's county?

I think you're pretty much spot on. The nomadic mercenaries was made smaller to give smaller rulers a chance to use mercenaries as well. Most of the smaller pre-existing companies is about 1600 or so after all.

Sounds great, but how does it make the game better optimized?

It doesn't it slows it down but it adds cool stuff if you want a faster game roll roll roll your patch back.

The Law-Section with "Status of Women" is interesting ...
It could be a Game-Breaking-Issue, but a good One, to avoid some of the weird Inheritance-Issues with Womens and regular Marriages.

Will it still be the best way to pass desired laws before growing big?

Right now a Petty King can pass Primogeniture and other laws as he likes, because there is no Crown Authority level restricting him and very few vassals which could prevent it by being at war or voting against it. Forming a kingdom too early can therefore actually be a noob trap e.g. because Primogeniture suddenly requires upgrading Crown Authority first all the way to High over several generations.

If a small absolute reigning petty king expands his realm, will the growing number of vassals have any leverage to actually restrict his power? I guess it is harder to change laws than to defend status quo.

Love the changes to education. Previously the educator had so much control that I ended up refusing to educate my own children because they always turned out as Ubermenschen. And huge applause for the warchest system. One can never have enough opportunities to screw over the vassals!

The new mercenaries system seems a bit strange though. Why would, for example, the Emperor of the HRE own his own mercenary company?

I hope it is mainly slanted as a money-maker for minor rulers and especially merchant republics.

When one has the ambition for kingship, it says it reduces the cost of attaining the kingdom. Does this just mean piety/gold or does it reduce requirements as well?

Is the subjugation cb accompanying the ambition still just restricted to Pagan tribals?

If Tribals have no council are they permanently discontent?

Very good! I long waited for a DLC like this, focusing on the internal realm.

Note that the Educator’s traits will now very rarely affect the child’s development - this is a major change to how it worked before. Also, a young character’s attributes now grow randomly with some genetic influence from the parents - but is no longer affected by the Guardian’s or Educator’s stats.

Before this, a child's yearly stat gain was influenced by the parents' stats from age 0-6 and by the educator's stats from age 6-16. Also, the child's education trait was largely determined by the educator's education trait (see Arumba's analysis from a few years ago). Unless I'm misreading something, these changes sound like there's a lot more RNG involved now, so that you essentially have less control over your child's development. Could you comment on why you thought this was a necessary change? I'm not against other additions like the childhood focus, I just don't see the point in changing an education system that worked perfectly fine.
