Hello there.

I have a couple doubts concerning pre-spacefaring species.

First one: We know you can find and observe them silently and so on. But can it happen that during the timeframe of a game, a pre-spacefaring species independently reaches space age and starts interacting with the galactic community? If yes, will there be mechanisms in which your previous attitude towards them influence their starting relationship with you?

Second: If you choose to just observe a pre-spacefaring species, or even just leave them alone, will there be means of stopping other space empires from meddling with them? And even, setting rules of conduct for a Federation concerning treatment of these species? Like: Exterminate on sight, elevate on sight, leave alone?

I find this part of the game one with great potential and great flavour.

It would take a paradox Dev to answer this for sure, but my guess is that if a species you observe develops FTL on their own, you would get a decision to either intervene, reveal yourself and welcome them into the galactic community, or to leave them alone. The first might be a % chance of them staying pre-FTL and exploitable, or getting FTL anyway and hating your guts, the second might let them start out as close friends or allies and the third as neutrals.

Your second question depends on wether these planets will be considered yours or neutral. Now that you mention it, it would be pretty interesting if we could meddle with some other empires race that is in the process of enslavement/genetic engineering by showing them the true colors of their "gods" ;)
Not sure if that would be easy to program though

I find this part of the game one with great potential and great flavour.

I'd like to know this as well. The Devs have not been expressly clear on this yet. I don't understand what the observation is about yet either. Do we get science from invasive or observant study of them? Surely it can't continue forever though.

EDIT: Beaten to it by the answer. Thanks Goosecreature

That's actually really cool that you differentiate peoples into ages, it's a clever idea. While you are still working on that particular game element, would you say Bronze age people progressing would be impossible or just improbable, with a little help from little green men like us? I mean is there a vision that you guys are going for that you could share rather than what will or will not be there?

I believe you would have to wait for the dev diary ;-) as he stated, they are still working this out so what it´s like now might be different when they are ready to show it :)

"The Prime Directive is not just a set of rules. It is a philosophy, and a very correct one. History has proven again and again that whenever mankind interferes with a less developed civilization, no matter how well intentioned that interference may be, the results are invariably disastrous."

They better start praying to the god-emperor of the space-funghi empire that they will be choosen to become a genetically modified race of slave-farmers. Because you know, I also need a slave-soldier race and a slave-toiletcleaner race.

I guess you could say that my intentions won't be well intentioned.

Anyhow, any race living on a tropical world is dead anyway because that's what my funghi like for themselves. I'm not sure why but the prospect of this game really seems to bring out the genocidal, genetically experiment and alien abduction loving side of me.

That'd be a pretty interesting social experiment actually, giving a developing species technology far, far beyond their ken and seeing what they do with it.

Kill each other. There can only be one!

Yes, there is a chance of them eventually developing space flight on their own if they are left alone. This depends on which state you find them in, though - you are unlikely to see Bronze Age aliens progress all the way to the Space Age within the span of one game.

We're still working on this part of the game, so I can't give you a lot of details yet. I'm sure there'll be a Dev Diary about this somewhere down the line. ;)

Speaking of dev diaries... when, roughly, will we start seeing some of those?
