those planes were very far away from the actual battle, since daniel didnt redeploy them more south. They basicly had to fly all the way north from rome down to siciliy to support the troops and naval bombers arent known for being very fast planes. If he had deployed his naval bombers in siciliy it would have looked alot different.
Um, no. Even the slowest plane is not that slow. Stuka bombers, JU-88s, and Heinkel 111's were used against transport convoys headed to the USSR via the Artic Ocean north of Norway, Sweden, and Finland.
The range of naval bombers could be increased via: a) external drop tanks and b) if they didn't need to fly all the way back to their origin but instead landed closer to their targets. (See Battle of Philippine Sea, IJN dive and torpedo bombers were launched outside of their normal range with the intent that they would land on friendly airbases thus keeping their carriers far out of range).
